REVIEW/MOTIVATION
What was our topic last meeting? It’s all about Solving Systems of Linear
Equations by Graphing and Substitution.
Let’s have a recap.
Let us solve the equations by substitution.
Example number 1.
x +y = 5 → y = -x +5
2x + 3y = 9
Substitute –x +5 to the second equation and
solve for x.
Who wants to continue the solution? Substitute –x +5 to the second equation and
solve for x.
2x + 3(-x + 5) = 9
2x -3x +15 = 9
-x = 9 – 15
-x = - 6 -Divide both sides by -1
x=6
Substitute 6 to x in the equation 1 and solve for
y.
x+y=5
6+y=5
y = 5-6
y = -1
Check. Substitute 6 to x and -1 to y in both
equations.
x+y=5 2x + 3y = 9
6 -1 = 5 2(6) + 3(-1) = 9
5=5 12- 3 =9
9=9
Therefore, the solution is (6, -1) or SS = (6, -1)
Yes, the solution of the two equations is
(6, -1).
Example 2: Solve by substitution.
15x + 3y = 3
2x + 3y = -23
Example 2: Solve by substitution.
Who wants to example try number 2? 15x + 3y = 3
3y = -15x +3 –Divide both sides by 3.
y = -5x +1
Substitute -5x +1 to y in the second equation
and solve for x.
2x + 3y = -23
2x + 3(-5x +1) = -23
2x -15x +3 = -23
-13x = -23 – 3
-13x = -23 -3
-13x = -26 –Divide both sides by -13
x=2
Substitute 2 to x in the second equation and
solve for y.
2x + 3y = -23
2(2) + 3y = -23
3y = -23-4
3y = -27
y = -9
Check. Substitute 2 to x and -9 to y in both
equations.
15x + 3y = 3 2x + 3y = -23
15(2) + 3(-9) = 3 2(2) + 3(-9) = -23
30 – 27 = 3 4 – 27 = -23
3=3 -23 = -23
Therefore, the solution is (2, -9) or SS = (2, -9).
Yes, exactly! The solution is (2, -9).
Very good! Any clarifications?
None, Ma’am
I’m so impress that you all understand our
previous lesson.
D. DISCUSSION
Now, let’s proceed to our lesson this
morning is all about Solving Systems of
Linear Equations by Elimination.
By the end of the lesson you must be able to:
1. Solve a system of linear equations in
two variables by elimination.
2. Solve problems involving systems of
linear equation.
3. Participate actively in class
discussion.
Let us have an example and let us use the
three method: Substitution, Comparison and
Elimination method.
Eq.1: 2x + y =12
Eq.2: 3x –y = 3
Let us use the substitution method:
y = -2x + 12
Then, substitute -2x + 12 to y in equation 2
to solve for x.
3x – y = 3
3x – (-2x +12) = 3 -simplify
3x + 2x -12 =3
5x = 3 + 12
5x = 15
x=3
Since, we have the value of x let’s substitute
3 to x in any of the equation to solve for y.
3x – y = 3
3(3) – y = 3
-y = 3 – 9
-y = -6 -Divide both sides by -1
y=6
Therefore, the solution is (3, 6).
Comparison method:
Eq. 1: 2x + y = 12 → y = -2x +12
Eq. 2: 3x – y = 3 → -y = -3x +3
→ y = 3x -3
Since, y =y
Therefore, -2x + 12 = 3x -3
-2x +12 = 3x -3
-2x -3x = -3 -12
-5x = -15 -Divide both sides by -5
x=3
Then, substitute the value of x to any of the
equation to solve for y.
2x + y = 12
2(3) + y =12
6 + y = 12
y = 12 -6
y=6
As you can see we use two methods and the
results are the same. Now, let’s have the
elimination method.
Elimination method:
Let’s eliminate y.
2x + y = 12
3x – y = 3
5x = 15
x=3
2x + y = 12
2(3) + y = 12
y = 12 -6
y=6
So, you see they have the same results as we
use the three methods. Another example Ma’am.
Let us have another example.
Use the elimination method:
3a + 4b = -1
a+b=0
Let’s choose any variable to eliminate. In
this case, let us eliminate a. We will multiply
the second equation by -3. Add the resulting
equation to the first equation. Solve for the
value of b.
Who wants to try? 3a + 4b = -1
-3a -3b = 0
Solution.
Step 1: Choose any variable to eliminate. In this
case, let us eliminate a.
Step 2: Solve for the value of b.
3a + 4b = -1
-3a -3b = 0
b=-1
Step 3: Substitute -1 to b in any equation of the
original equations.
3a +4b = -1
3a + 4(-1) = -1
3a – 4 = -1
3a = -1 + 4
3a = 3
a=1
Therefore, the solution set is (1, -1).
Yes, the solution set is (1, -1).
Good job!
Any clarifications?
Another example Ma’am
Okay, let’s have another example:
4w + 5z = 6
6w -7z = -20
Let us eliminate w so we will find numbers
that can we multiply in both equations to
eliminate w.
3(4w + 5z = 6)
-2(6w -7z = -20
12w + 15z = 18
-12w + 14z = 40
29z = 58
z=2
Substitute 2 to z in any equation and solve
for w.
4w + 5z = 6
4w + 5(2) = 6
4w + 10 = 6
4w = 6- 10
4w = -4
w = -1
Therefore, the solution set is (-1, 2).
Are we clear? Are you still confused with
our lesson about elimination?
No, Ma’am
E. ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES IFVL:
Try this in a one half sheet of paper.
Instruction: Solve the following equations
using any of the three methods. Substitution,
Comparison and Elimination method.
1. 4a +8b = 20
-4a +2b = -4
2. -7c +d = -19
-2c +3d = -17
Are you all done? Who wants to answer?
1. 4a +8b = 20
-4a +2b = -30
Step 1: Eliminate a and solve for b.
4a +8b = 20
-4a +2b = -30
10b = -10
b = -1
Step 2 & 3: Substitute -1 to b in any equations
and solve for a.
4a + 8b = 20
4a + 8(-1) = 20
4a -8 = 20
4a = 20+ 8
4a = 28 -Divide both sides by 4
a=7
Therefore, the solution set is (7, -1).
Let’s check your answer.
It’s correct the solution set is (7, -1).
How about number 2?
2. -7c +d = -19
-2c +3d = -19
Solution.
Step 1: Eliminate c and solve for d.
-2(-7c +d = -19)
7(-2c +3d = -19)
14c – 2d = 38
-14c + 21d = -133
19d = 95
d=5
Step 2: Substitute 5 to d in any equation and
solve for c.
-2c + 3d = -19
-2c + 3(5) = -19
-2c + 15 = -19
-2c = -19 -15
-2c = - 34 -Divide both sides by -2
c = 17
Therefore, the solution set is (5, 17).
Very good! The solution set is (5, 17).
