The Research Paper

How to put your parts together

Joseph Szewczyk
for University of the People
Research Paper

What to do?

• You already have almost all (if not all) of the parts for a
research paper

• All you need to do is put your revised parts in order and

make sure they flow smoothly with each transition
Research Paper
A Research Paper can have the following parts:

• Title
• Abstract
• Introduction
• Literature Review
• Methodology
• Results
• Conclusion
• Reference List
Research Paper

The Abstract

• This is the 100-250 word concise summary of your work

• It can have keywords at the end

• It is usually the 1st thing people read

Research Paper

The Introduction

• This is where you will put your thesis

• You can put a ‘road map’ for people to follow your paper easier

• You need to hook your reader here

• Remember to focus on ‘Who Cares?’ and ‘So What?’

Research Paper

The Literature Review

• This is used to establish that you have read the current literature
in the field and that you can connect the work in analysis and
synthesis to this field

• Make sure you give proper in-text citations

• Try to use up-to-date information from peer reviewed sources

Research Paper
The Methodology

• This is just a fancy word for “How did you look and gather
your information or data.”

• You have two basic “types” of methodology

• Quantitative (Numbers and Statistical studies)
• Qualitative (Usually based on story or report).

• Explain what you did and why you did it.

Research Paper

The Results

• What did you find out?

• Put the results into a narrative form
• Tell your audience as if you were explaining to someone
in person
• Use your data to back up your words
• Is it what you expected? Why or why not?
• Did anyone have the same results as you in a study? Why
might yours be the same or different?
Research Paper
The Conclusion
• Usually the 2nd thing anyone reads when scanning for research
readings

• Should restate the thesis

• Only have what was discussed in the paper

• Can include a brief bit on where the research can go in the

future
Research Paper

Reference List
• List all of the sources cited in your paper

• All sources should be formatted in according to APA guidelines
