Lesson 1: Current Trends in Educational
Technology
The objective of this lesson is for you to identify the
benefits and challenges of integrating technology in the
classroom. By the end of this lesson, you should be
able to understand how these trends enhance teaching
and learning and be aware of the potential benefits and
challenges of implementing these technologies in their
classrooms.
What are the current trends in integrating
technology in education?
Some of the current trends in shaping
mathematics education with the use of technology are
as follows:
a. Adaptive learning systems
b. Gamification
c. Data Analysis Tools
d. Graphing Applications
Adaptive learning systems such as ALEKS use
artificial intelligence to create an individualized

learning experience. These systems adjust the difficulty
of the examples used and content discussed based on
the student’s performance. These provide students
with opportunities to practice and master the skills at
their own pace. These also provide teachers with a
helping hand in managing their lessons and identifying
which lessons need to be discussed based on their
students’ needs.
Gamification helps the class to be engaging for the
learners. Game mechanics can be incorporated into
the lessons using applications such as Prodigy Math
Game. These apps make learning Mathematics fun and
interesting.
Data analysis tools such as MS Excel help
students understand the concepts in Statistics and
Probability. Teachers may use these tools for the
students to perform hands-on explorations of
probability distributions, create histograms, and
conduct hypothesis testing, enhancing their
understanding of statistical concepts through practical
application.

Graphing applications such as Desmos and
Geogebra can be used to demonstrate Mathematics
concepts through dynamic visualizations. Students
can interactively manipulate graphs and geometric
figures which enables them to have a deeper
understanding of functions, transformations, and
geometric properties, making abstract concepts more
concrete and engaging.
Case Studies: Successful Technology
Integration in Mathematics Classrooms
A study conducted by Chroney (2022) investigates
how teachers integrate Desmos in their classrooms. It
is concluded that the knowledge of how to successfully
integrate this tool in their classrooms is based on
practice, rather than formal training. This implies that
aside from training, the success of utilizing technology
in the classroom is dependent on the actual use of
these tools in the lessons.
The study of Rohaeti, Bernard and Primandhika
(2019) also showed that the use of Excel in teaching
junior high school students about connecting

Mathematics lessons with basic Mathematics
knowledge is effective in improving their ability to
understand Mathematics.
With this, the use of technology in your classes
may be helpful by allowing you to demonstrate complex
mathematical concepts through interactive
visualizations. These tools will also help you enhance
your lessons by offering powerful data analysis and
visualization capabilities, allowing for practical
demonstrations of statistical concepts and data
handling techniques.
