Community Service Proposal for Community Progressive Focus Centre,
Kenya
1. Brief Profile of the Institution
Community Progressive Focus Centre is a dedicated home and support center for vulnerable
children in Njiru, Nairobi County. Founded by Salyvaih Thuo while working at the Kenya US
Embassy, the center was established to provide food, shelter, education, and other basic needs for
children who were previously neglected and uncared for. Over the years, the center has grown
from hosting 13 children to accommodating many more, ensuring they have a safe and
supportive environment to thrive.
As local schools often discriminate against children from the streets and are located far from the
center, Salyvaih recognized the need to establish an in-house school to ensure access to quality
education. Additionally, to improve sustainability, the center engages in various income-
generating activities, including rabbit farming, poultry keeping, and goat rearing. However,
financial constraints continue to pose challenges to these initiatives, making external support
crucial for the long-term success of the center.
2. Project Description
This project aims to enhance the sustainability and self-sufficiency of the Community
Progressive Focus Centre by supporting its income-generating initiatives and improving the
living conditions of the children. The focus areas include the procurement of essential items
such as books, paints, furniture, utensils, and foodstuffs. These resources will contribute to the
children’s education, creativity, and overall well-being while ensuring a comfortable and
supportive living environment.
In addition to providing these necessities, the project will emphasize efficient resource
management and caregiver training to maximize the impact of available resources. By
strengthening these initiatives, the center can continue offering shelter, education, and healthcare
to vulnerable children without relying entirely on external donations.
3. Problem Statement
Despite the significant impact of the Community Progressive Focus Centre, financial instability
threatens its ability to adequately provide for the children. Rising costs of food, education, and
essential supplies create ongoing challenges in sustaining daily operations.
The lack of sufficient learning materials, furniture, and utensils limits the children’s educational
and developmental opportunities, while inadequate funding restricts the center’s ability to
maintain a well-equipped and comfortable environment. Additionally, food insecurity remains a
concern, making it essential to invest in sustainable solutions that ensure consistent nourishment
for the children.
This project aims to address these challenges by providing necessary resources and promoting
self-sufficiency, allowing the center to continue offering vital care, education, and support to
vulnerable children without over-reliance on external donations.

contributes to SDG 2: Zero Hunger by providing essential food supplies and improving
nutrition for the children. Furthermore, SDG 4: Quality Education is addressed by enhancing
learning conditions through the provision of books, furniture, and other educational resources.
Kenya’s Vision 2030 prioritizes social welfare and sustainable development. By improving
