Technical Service Information: Ford, Jaguar, Mazda, Rover, VW, Equipped With Jf506-E

Vehicles equipped with the JF506-E transaxle may experience a flare on the 2-3 upshift or slipping in higher gears due to a crack in the high and reverse clutch piston housing. This issue can lead to premature high clutch failure and requires the replacement of the affected housing with a new design available from Mazda. Visual detection of the crack is difficult, making it crucial to address this problem during service.

Technical Service Information

FORD, JAGUAR, MAZDA, ROVER, VW,

EQUIPPED WITH JF506-E
2-3 FLARE OR, SLIPS 3RD, 4TH, 5TH
COMPLAINT: Before and/or after overhaul, vehicles listed above and equipped with the JF506-E transaxle,
may exhibit a flare on the 2-3 upshift, or slips when in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear.

CAUSE: The cause may be, high and reverse clutch piston housing, as shown in Figure 1.

CORRECTION: This crack is extremely difficult to detect visually, and if missed will create premature high
clutch failure. This piston cracks in an area of the piston that allows the high clutch apply oil
to bleed into the reverse clutch circuit, as shown in Figure 1. The reverse clutch circuit is
basically an exhaust, when the transaxle is in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear.
Replace the high and reverse clutch piston housing, as shown in Figure 1. There is now a 2nd
design piston available from Mazda. Refer to Figure 2 for an exploded view of the high and
reverse drum showing the housing location.
