Concept Notes
Equal Powers
Two expressions are considered equal if the base and exponents are equal. So in the equation ax = ay, since
the two expressions have the same base, we can conclude that x = y.
Now, let us observe the situation below.
Consider the diagram that shows a text brigade of an organization.

From the diagram, we can visualize an increasing number of text recipients. Without much thinking, we can
also identify that in the 4th level, there should have 16 recipients. How about if the question is, at what level will
there be 256 persons who will receive the message? In the case, you need to see this pattern.
1 = 20
2 = 21
4 = 22
8 = 23
256 = 2x
Now, we have an exponential equation. To solve this, we need to use the skills we learned in the flash back
activity, where we get the prime factors of the given number. Our goal is to make the base of two expressions
equal, so that we can apply the Equal Powers Rule.
256 = 2*2*2*2*2*2*2*28
So we have, 256 = 2
2=2
8 = x Equal Powers Rule
Or x = 8 Symmetric Property
Then, at the 8th level, there will be 256persons who will receive the message.
Observe more examples.
Find the value of x.
1. 3x+3 = 81 81 = 3*3*3*3 or 44
3x+3 = 34 Exponential Form
x+3=4 Equal Power Rule
x=1 APE (-3)
To check if your answer is correct, you may substitute the answer to the equation.
3x+3 = 81
31+3 = 81
34 = 81
81 = 81
Activity: Try these. Solve for x in each of the following equations.
A. 2x = 23
1
B. 5x =
125
C. 2x-1 = 4x
D. 3x+7 = 256
E. 82x = 32
