CE3L005 - Foundation Engineering

AY2024-25-Spring
Home Assignment #1
January 9, 2025

P-1. A soil with Gs = 2.72 and e = 0.52 forms an infinite slope inclined at 30◦ with the
horizontal. A thin weak layer (c′ = 25kN/m2 and ϕ′ = 15◦ ) exists at 6 m below and
parallel to the slope. Compute the factors of safety when

(a) the slope is dry

(b) the ground water flows parallel to the slope at the slope level

P-2. Find the critical height of an infinite slope having a slope angle of 30◦ for the given
three cases. The slope is made of stiff clay having a cohesion 20kN/m2 , angle of
internal friction 20◦ , void ratio 0.7 and specific gravity 2.7.

(a) the slope is dry

(b) the water seeps parallel to the surface of the slope
(c) the slope is submerged

P-3. Explain how you would measure the stability of an infinite slope when the phreatic
line is not parallel to the surface. Search for a method available in the literature.

P-4. Revisit the idealizations and assumptions considered in the analysis of infinite slopes
