Assignment #2
Observation & Presentation
Sustainable Materials Vs. Non-Sustainable Materials in Interiors
From our lecture series you were introduced to a variety of non-sustainable materials & their sustainable counterparts. In
this assignment you are required to select a commonly used non-sustainable finishing material in Interiors & a sustainable
alternative to that material. This assignment is aimed to equip you with sustainable practice when designing interior
environments. Each student will individually select two materials to compare & their research must include the following:
1. Non-sustainable material (brief, extraction process, manufacture process, carbon footprint energy consumption,
environmental impact, application & installation (adhesive/resin) etc.)
2. Sustainable material as an alternative (brief, extraction process, manufacture process, carbon footprint energy
consumption, environmental impact, application & installation (adhesive/resin) etc.)
3. Conclusion (what did you learn & how is the alternative a better solution? how does it protect the environment)
Keep in mind that the more comprehensive your research the better your presentation will be. Try to use this assignment
as an opportunity to develop your graphical presentation skills, & feel free to use analysis diagrams & annotation to
explain your findings.
Assignment objectives
• To identify non-sustainable materials & their sustainable alternatives
• Learn how these materials are installed in interiors.
• Understand how various sustainable materials impact the environment.
• Document & understand how to select sustainable materials & apply them in design.
How to do the assignment
In class I will explain to you the assignment in detail during class. This assignment is intended to equip you with adequate
theoretical knowledge that will enable you to apply into practice. You will be conducting this assignment individually. Make
sure that you properly cite your sources (DO NOT COPY PASTE) you may use the resources below.
Submission & presentation
Each of you will briefly present to the class your findings during class time. You will individually
submit your research file in PDF format on blackboard. Make sure to include course code, course
name, instructor name, & name of the assignment on the cover page.
Resources
To help ensure the academic integrity of your research I recommend using these free resources to check
the authenticity of your findings as well as to help guide you to properly cite your research. Note that
