Activities and Learning Outcomes
Week 1: Orientation and Introduction
Orientation: Our first week began with a comprehensive orientation
session. We were introduced to the company’s history, mission, and vision
by our trainer, Mr. Essaki Muthu. We also familiarized ourselves
with the safety protocols and standard operating procedures, which are
crucial in a high-risk environment like a machine shop. Introduction to
CNC Machines: We received an overview of CNC machines, their
components, and their applications in various industries. This included
understanding the basic operation of CNC machines, types of CNC
machines (like lathes, milling machines, and routers), and their roles in
modern manufacturing.

Week 2: Electrical Maintenance of CNC Machines

Component Identification: We delved into the identification and
understanding of various electrical components in CNC machines. This
included studying motors, drives, controllers, sensors, and their functions.
We learned about the importance of each component in the overall
operation of the machine. Wiring and Circuitry: A significant portion of
our second week was dedicated to learning how to read and interpret
wiring diagrams and circuit schematics. This skill is vital for
troubleshooting and repairing electrical issues. We practiced connecting
and testing electrical circuits, ensuring we followed safety standards to
prevent accidents.
Troubleshooting: We engaged in hands-on troubleshooting of electrical
issues under the supervision of Mr. Essaki Muthu. This involved checking
for faulty wiring, testing components for continuity using multimeters, and
replacing defective parts. We learned systematic approaches to diagnosing
problems, which is essential for effective maintenance.
Week 3: Spindle Service
Spindle Basics: The third week focused on the spindle, a critical
component in CNC machines. We studied different types of spindles,
including beltdriven, gear-driven, and direct-drive spindles, and their
specific applications. Understanding the spindle's role in precision cutting
and its impact on the quality of the finished product was emphasized.
Disassembly and Reassembly: Under Mr. Essaki Muthu's guidance, we
gained hands-on experience in disassembling and reassembling spindles.
This included cleaning the spindles, inspecting them for wear and tear, and
replacing damaged parts. We learned about the different tools and
techniques used in spindle maintenance. Alignment and Calibration: We
were trained in aligning and calibrating spindles to ensure precision and
accuracy in machine operations. This involved using dial indicators and
other measuring instruments to check spindle runout and making necessary
adjustments to maintain optimal performance.
Week 4: Practical Applications and Final Assessment
Real-World Applications: In our final week, we applied our knowledge in
real-world scenarios by assisting in the maintenance and repair of customer
machines. This hands-on experience was invaluable, as it allowed us to
work on a variety of CNC machines with different issues. We worked under
the guidance of experienced technicians, ensuring that our work met
professional standards.
Assessment: Our performance was evaluated based on our understanding of
the concepts, practical skills, and problem-solving abilities. We received
feedback and suggestions for further improvement from Essaki Muthu. This
assessment helped us identify our strengths and areas for growth, ensuring
we left the internship with a clear path for future development .
Skills Acquired
Technical Skills: We acquired proficiency in the electrical maintenance
and spindle service of CNC machines. We developed the ability to read
and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics, diagnose and repair
electrical faults, and perform spindle disassembly, inspection, and
reassembly.
Problem-Solving: We enhanced our critical thinking and troubleshooting
skills. We learned to identify issues, analyze their causes, and implement
effective solutions. This experience improved our ability to work under
pressure and resolve complex technical problems.
Teamwork: We improved our ability to work collaboratively with
colleagues and supervisors. We learned the importance of effective
