Task 1
Task 1
You have received this email from an English-speaking friend, Alex. Read part of his email below.
Some friends of mine are going backpacking next month around Vietnam. They would like to learn
about Vietnamese culture and its history. Where should they begin the trip? What´s the easiest way to
get around? Where should they stay as they are on a tight budget?
Dear Alex,
Long time, no see! What a surprise to receive your email. The trip sounds amazing and I´m sure that your
friends will have a great time. I have a few ideas for things to do.
I think the best place to start the trip would be in Ho Chi Minh City - also called Saigon, as it’s easier to
get cheap flights to this city. The city has a great history related to Vietnam War and a great vibe. Then
they can take a trip out of the city and explore Mekong River, a paradise for wildlife.
From there I would start heading north and stop in Dalat, a scenic small city, then travel down the coast
by bus to Mui Ne and NhaTrang to enjoy some water sports. From NhaTrang it is easy to get a train to Da
Nang; don’t forget to visit Hoi An Ancient Town. Then go to Hue Imperial City, it is not to be missed. After
that, take a coach to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam and take a tour around the old city by motorbike or
even on foot. The best places to finish would be Ha Long Bay, a highlight on any Vietnam trip, and Sa Pa,
where they can explore Fansipan Mount.
Regarding accommodation, the best option would be to stay in hostels or dorms; they normally cost
between $5 and $8 per night.
Please let me know what you think. I look forward to speaking to you in the near future.
Your friend,
TASK 1:
I’m having a busy time at the moment as I have to write lots of Christmas cards to all my friends and
relatives. Do you celebrate Christmas in Vietnam? What holidays are celebrated in your country? What
is your favorite holiday? How do you celebrate it? Well, I’d better go now. I’ve got to help mum with
cooking. I can’t wait to hear from you. Lots of love, Dan
Write a letter to Dan. In your letter: answer his questions about Vietnamese holidays - ask 3 questions
about British holidays
Dear Dan,
Thanks a lot for your postcard. I also wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Actually, in Vietnam, Christmas isn't an official public holiday. In the past, Christmas was only celebrated
by the Christian community but in recent days it is getting more and more popular and is greeted with
happiness by Vietnamese people. They also decorate the streets and department stores with Christmas
trees, snowflake decorations and colorful lights. There are lots of other holidays celebrated in Vietnam
such as Women’s Day, Mid-Autumn Festival and New Year’s Day. My favorite holiday is Tet holiday. Tet is
a special holiday in Viet Nam. It’s on the first of January based on Lunar Calendar. To prepare for Tet,
people usually clean and decorate their houses. They also cook traditional food, such as banhchung or
banhtet. During Tet, each family has a big party. Children wear new clothes and get lucky money from
older people. It’s also the time to visit relatives, teachers and friends.
So how do you celebrate Christmas? Are there any holidays connected with British history? How do you
mark them?
Well, I’d better go now. It’s time to do the cooking. Take care and write back soon.
Your friend,
TASK 1: You are reading an English language magazine and you see details of a language school that you
are interested in:
Learn English at your own pace! If you would like to study English on a course that has been specially
designed to meet your needs and interests, then contact the Principal of the Active Learning School
giving details of your: Motivation for studying English; length of time studying English; strengths and
weaknesses in the language - Preferred start date and length of course - Hobbies and interests
I am writing with regard to your advertisement in the latest edition of “Learn English”, in which you offer
an English course that may meet my requirements. I am interested in a six-month intensive English
course, three or four classes per week if possible.
I am 20 years old now and I have been studying English since I was in secondary school. However, I am
sure I need to improve lots of things. Despite the fact I am quite good at grammar, I must admit I have
difficulties in pronunciation and expressing my ideas. Besides, I think I have some trouble remembering
and using new words.
I am very interested in languages, and my hobbies are reading books and watching films in English. I
consider all these activities are worthwhile since they help you develop your intellectual skills. Moreover,
I enjoy doing different activities every day in order to take advantage of the experience I may gain and
the things I can learn.
I would prefer to start the course as soon as possible and would appreciate a reply at your earliest
convenience.
Yours faithfully,
TASK 1: You have seen the following job advertisement in your local youth centre:
Would you like to work with young children aged 5-11? - Do you have lots of energy? - Are you
an excellent swimmer?
If the answer to these questions is 'yes' then we want to hear from you. Our Children's Club is looking
for someone to be in charge of a group of 10 children to teach them swimming and to do a range of
other activities. Please send a letter to MrsThanh saying why you are suitable for the job.
Dear MrsThanh,
I am writing to you with regard to your advertisement that appeared in the local youth centre and I
would like to apply for the position of Activity Co-coordinator.
I am 20 years old and currently I’m a senior student at National Economics University. I am used to
working with children because I have been working as a teaching assistant at an English Centre for
almost one year. Besides, I believe that I can meet your requirements about health as I train in the gym
twice a week and I often go hiking to the countryside with my friends. In addition to this, I have a
lifesaving certificate and have always loved swimming since I was a child.
My reason for applying for this position is that I am keen on combining my experience in swimming with
my ability of organizing different activities which I think will be interesting for the children.
Yours faithfully,
TASK 1: You have received the following email from your English pen-friend, Anne:
It's a really brave step to take a year out of college to come and spend 6 months in the UK! What are
you planning to do with your time? Find a job? Learn some new skills? Write back and give me more
details of your plans so I can do my best to help you have a good time.
Dear Anne,
How are you? It's been long since my last email but I was terribly busy listing details of my trip to
London. I really appreciate your willingness to help.
Generally, the main reason I’m going to the UK is to develop my language skills. I don't have any
experience of working abroad so I decided that I would try to find a job as a waitress in a restaurant. I
think it would be perfect to spend evenings working whereas daytime would be for sightseeing as well as
meeting my friends. I’ve always wanted to see Big Ben and Thames River, now my dream is going to
come true.
As for the details of the trip, I've just booked my flight. My departure time will be the 12 th of August, at 8
pm. As far as I know, the flight lasts more than twelve hours so I should turn up at the airport near
midday. I hope we will meet soon in London.
Love,
TASK 1:
You have seen the following job advertisement on the noticeboard of your local language school:
Our language school is looking for a person to help organise a Film Club for students of English. Our
Film Club will meet twice a week to watch a film in English followed by a discussion of the film.
Do you have some knowledge of English? - Do you like working with groups of people?- Are
you interested in films?
If you think you would be a suitable person to organize our Film Club then we would like to hear from
you. Please send a letter to the school owner saying why you are suitable for the job.
I am writing to you with regard to the job advertisement that I saw on the noticeboard of my local
language school. The advert stated that you need a person to help to organise a Film Club for students of
English.
I believe that I am a suitable person for this job. First of all, I have been studying English for ten years
now and I got a B2 Certificate. I am confident that I can speak English quite well. Secondly, I’m an
outgoing person and have the ability to control a discussion. I like talking with peopleabout a wide range
of topics. This will prove helpful in the club. And last but not least, I’m really keen on watching movies. I
often go to the cinemas with friends and then we usually discuss the movie, so I think I have had a little
experience.
Please do not hesitate to contact me via phone number 0934828358 if you would like to have more
information about me.
Yours sincerely,
TASK 1:
You have received the following letter from your English pen friend, Mary:
I'm really pleased you're planning to come to England to study. Let me know what type of course
you're interested in and I'll ring some colleges for details. The more information you can give me the
better!
Thank you very much for your letter. As I told you in my previous letter, I began an English course three
months ago and by now I have had a good result but I think it would be better for me to go to England to
have an advanced course of about three weeks to make a definite improvement inmy English
pronunciation and vocabulary.
I'd really prefer a morning course. This is because in the afternoon I want to have enough free time to
spend with you and go sightseeing. Besides, I also need accommodation during my stay in Manchester. I
guess the best place to stay is in a house with a host family because I want to practice English every day,
but if you've got a better idea, please let me know. Moreover, I need to ask you two more questions.
First, have you got any idea of how much I would have to pay for the course? Second, do you think it is
possible to get a part-time job in the evening?
Thank you in advance for your help and I'd really appreciate it if you could check the course fee and the
accommodation for me first.
Regards,
TASK 1: This is part of an email you have received from an English-speaking friend, who will be visiting
your hometown for a short stay:
We're doing a project this month at school on eating habits and customs around the world. Will you
be able to help me by telling me what the traditional meals are in your country, what people typically
eat and at what time of day?
Dear Barbara,
I am very happy to receive your letter. It’s my pleasure to help you with your project, and I hope that I
can give you some details you could use.
In the main, Vietnamese people have breakfast at around 7 am. The breakfast can be a loaf of bread or a
bowl of noodles. We often drink coffee or milk when having breakfast. Then at around 12 pm, we have
lunch. A typical meal usually includes rice, a dish of meat or fish, a dish of vegetables and a bowl of soup.
There are also dipping sauces and side dishes like pickled cabbage to enhance the flavor of other dishes.
After the meal, we have some fruit for dessert. The old people would prefer to have a cup of green tea.
Between 6 and 7 pm most Vietnamese families have their dinner which resembles lunch.
Your friend,
TASK 1:
This is part of an email you have received from an English-speaking friend, who will be visiting your
hometown for a short stay:
What a pity you won't be around when we arrive. Anyway, we'll only be there for one day and I was
wondering whether you could recommend a couple of local restaurants. Something that caters for
families would be great ... we eat anything!
Hi Alan,
It’s great to hear from you. I really looked forward to seeing you and your lovely family again, but my
unexpected business trip has changed that plan! Anyway, I’m sure that you will have a good time here.
There are 2 famous restaurants in Hanoi that I would like to recommend to you. The first one is Highway
4, which is located at 25 Bat Su Street, HoanKiem District. This restaurant has classic Vietnamese
furnishings, English-speaking staff and a large menu of Vietnamese traditional dishes. You should not
miss the catfish spring rolls - the signature dish here. The second one that I would probably go to is Sen.
Its address is 60 Ly Thai To Street, HoanKiem District. It is a sophisticated restaurant serving a buffet
dinner that will impress everyone – even people who don’t usually like buffets! It offers excellent
international dishes, seafood and Vietnamese food. Both of the restaurants are close to HoanKiem Lake,
so you can go for a walk after the meal.
Well, I hope you do like one of those and wish you an enjoyable day! Give my love to your family!
Your friend,
TASK 1:
Read this extract from a letter you have recently sent to a friend:
Oh, and by the way, don't go to XZY Restaurant for your birthday. We went there last night - the
service was awful and the food was a disaster! I complained to the head waiter but he asked me to
put it in writing.
I am writing to express my annoyance at the service I received in your restaurant yesterday. I chose your
restaurant to invite my relatives following the advertisement and reviews on “Hanoi Food Blog”, but the
reality failed to live up to my expectations.
First, as advertised on the blog, you had a variety of set meals on the menu. However, many dishes were
unavailable yesterday, which really disappointed my guests. Although we had wanted to have seafood,
we had to choose rice with pork and some kinds of fresh juice.
When the food came out, it was cold and we were given chicken by mistake so they had to take it away
and make another meal. The juice was good but the pork was overcooked and salty and some was just
bone, knuckle and skin. None of the meals we had could be finished.
After a few attempts to get someone's attention to pay, we went up to the counter and on paying the
bill, I complained about this inconvenience to your head waiter, but he asked me to contact you directly
in writing. I feel that a refund of at least 500.000 dong, which is half of our bill, would be appropriate. I
look forward to receiving a satisfactory reply within 7 days.
Yours sincerely,
TASK 1: You have read the following information from a Singaporean university, and have decided to
apply for a course:
The university welcomes applications to all its courses from overseas students. Please write to the
Admissions Officer giving details of the course you wish to apply for and why. Your letter should
include an outline of your qualifications and any other relevant information.
I am writing to apply for your two-year degree in teaching English at university level. At present, I am a
teacher of English in a secondary school in Vietnam.
I am keen to improve my English as this is not only my hobby but also a strong need. In addition, I should
add that I am already halfway towards achieving my goal. I graduated from Hanoi University of
Languages and International Studies with a Master's Degree. Moreover, I have a great deal of work
experience that demonstrates my ability in languages. In addition to being an ESL teacher, I have
undertaken a number of translation projects. At present, I’m aiming to get C1 Certificate and I estimate
that my English level is at an advanced level.
I am particularly interested in completing my degree at your university as it is famous all over the world. I
hope you will give my application serious consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
TASK 1:
You have been informed that the company you work for is going to close down its sports and leisure club
in order to save costs. You have organised a meeting with your colleagues to discuss the matter and the
following points were made:
The club is used by most employees after work and it brings a lot of benefits.
Action: write an email to the Managing Director on behalf of employees explaining our views and
asking for a change of mind.
I am writing on behalf of my colleagues to express our concern about your decision to close our fitness
club and we would like to share with you our opinions on this matter.
As you know very well, many of us go to this club regularly. We take advantage of its wonderful facilities,
ranging from the swimming pool to the sauna. The club location is very convenient for employees
because we do not waste time commuting there since this center is very close to our workplace.
Furthermore, this leisure center seems to be an ideal place for relaxing after a hard day at work. You
cannot deny that general health is closely connected with work efficiency.
We appreciate that there is a real need to decrease costs. However, closing the club is not the only
solution available. We encourage you to find another way of saving money. Perhaps some of us would
accept a slight increase in prices for using these amenities, of course with reduced rates.
Taking everything into account, we would be grateful if you could reconsider your decision. We are
convinced that retaining this club would be beneficial both for all employees and work performance.
Yours faithfully,
TASK 1:
We are looking for someone in September to assist our lifeguards, provide supervision during beach
activities and observe swimmers.
Write to the Lifeguard Manager, saying what your experience and qualifications are and stating the
reasons why you are suitable for the job.
I am looking for an outdoor job during the summer holidays and I would like to apply for the position of
lifeguard assistant that I saw advertised in my university’s student newspaper.
I am 20 years old and at present, I am studying Physical Education. I am a strong swimmer and have
recently had first-aid training. I enjoy working with people very much and for the last two summers, I
have been working as an assistant in a National Park, where I had to provide information to the public
about the rules when visiting the park and provide emergency assistance to the park visitors. Now I am
looking for something different.
I think I would be a suitable candidate for the position because I have been described as calm in a crisis
and someone who works well with others.
I am available for the whole of September and would be happy to attend an interview at any time. I look
forward to hearing from you at any time in the near future.
Yours faithfully,
TASK 1:
You have received this email from a friend called Bill. Read part of his email below.
Well, I have had some health problems recently. I don’t know the exact reason, but I think it may
come from my smoking. I started smoking a couple of months ago and I’m becoming dependent on it.
Every day I smoke a few cigarettes, maybe 4-5. Could you please give me some advice? I feel quite
depressed… (write to your friend)
Hi Bill,
I got your e-mail yesterday. I was excited to finally hear from you, although the news is not very good.
I am sorry for your health problems. But why did you start smoking? Do you have problems with your
friends, family, or school? If so, do you get some kind of satisfaction from smoking? I have heard that it
helps with anger and anxiety, but boy it isn’t worth it! This may cause your asthma. You'd better talk to
your parents and a doctor if you haven't yet.
Last night I made a close study on the internet about possible ways to give up smoking. I came across
some really interesting solutions, which I will send you later. In many blogs, people share their
experiences and say that you need a strong will and supportive friends. Think about your future. You've
got the chance to win a scholarship and study technology. You've been dreaming of this since you were
6. Don't throw away your chances by doing pointless things. I hope you will think about my advice.
Love,
TASK 1:
I’m a rock fan. I can listen to rock all day. What about you? What kind of music do you like? What is
your favorite song and artist? Please write to tell me more about your music taste.
Hi Nancy,
Thanks for your letter. I'm happy to tell you what you wanted to know - I'm mad about music! My
favorite is Vietnamese folk music. It is extremely diverse, but my favorite type is “dance”. I've been a folk
music fan for all my life since my mother used folk music as my lullaby song.
Some of my friends think I'm strange and old-fashioned - they often listen to pop music and their idols
are young and trendy artists. They're OK, of course, but I prefer listening to singer ThanhThanhHien or
AnhTho - you can try listening to their songs on YouTube. The singers have great voices and the lyrics are
usually good, too.
I listen to country music nearly all the time. I usually listen with headphones on in my bedroom, but
sometimes I listen on the CD player with my parents. They are also big fans of folk music like me.
Love,
TASK 1:
I’m fine but I’ve got a very busy week ahead. I’m a member of the school team and we are preparing
for an important match in the National Championship. Are you fond of football? Do you watch football
matches on TV? What other sports do you enjoy? Well, I’d better go now. I’ve got to do some more
training - I don’t want to lose this match.
Hi Chris,
How’s it going? Thanks for your last letter. I’m glad you are in your school football team now! You should
be proud of yourself!
In your letter, you asked me about football. Well, I’m really fond of it. It’s a great sport and I’m always
happy when my team wins. But I don’t watch football matches on TV because it’s rather boring. I prefer
playing to watching as it’s more exciting. I’m also interested in roller skating. It’s fun to take part in street
competitions and to perform different tricks.
Anyway, what about your preparation for the National Championship? Do you work hard? How many
times a week do you train? Do you get on well with your teammates?
Well, I’d better go now as I have to tidy up my room. I wish you best luck with your match. And don’t
forget to write back soon!
Your friend,
TASK 1:
Your English friend is coming to you for a month. She/he likes running and asks you whether she/he
could go running in your town. Write an e-mail (at least 120 words) and inform her/him about the
following: • where you can go running in your town- would you go running with her/him (why/why not)
-what sports you like (why)- what other sports your town offers (e.g. swimming, tennis, etc.)
Hi Tom,
Thank you for your letter. It was wonderful to hear from you again. I really look forward to your trip to
Hanoi. I’m sure that you’ll have a great time here.
Running is also my favorite activity and we can run in the park together every day. If you like, we can go
to the suburb of Hanoi, which only takes us half an hour to travel by motorbike and run on the meadow
at the weekend.
I think you will feel good in Hanoi because there are a lot of facilities for those who are fond of doing
sport like you. You can find a lot of tennis fields, swimming pools and gyms here. We must pay a visit to
the new sports hall because I want to show a new football field to you. I like watching the football game
on the TV but it can’t be compared to watching a live match! I also play volleyball with my friends twice a
week on Thursdays and Saturdays and if you are interested, we are all pleased to have you on the team.
Please write to me soon to tell me more about your departure time. I’ll see you at the airport.
Regards,
TASK 1:
You have received a letter from your pen-friend, who suggests that you could stay with her uncle and
aunt when you visit England. Address your letter ( to Mr. and Mrs Brown. In your letter, you should: - Ask
if you could stay with them and thank them in advance. - Give a brief description of yourself - Ask them
which dates would be best for them - Ask for suggestions about things to visit in the area.
I am writing to you as your nephew, Thomas, had mentioned about you when he suggested a place for
me to stay when I come to England. I would be grateful if I could stay in your place for five days;
however, please feel free to let me know if it may cause any inconvenience to you. I would like to thank
you very much in advance, no matter what your decision is.
I should tell you a bit about myself. I am a senior student at Hanoi University, Vietnam and I am an
outgoing and open-minded person. I enjoy talking to people and making friends. My interests are
classical music and romantic movies.
I am planning to come next month, but the dates are flexible. If I could stay in your place, would it be
better for you if I came at the beginning of the month or at the end?
Finally, if possible, could you suggest any interesting places I could visit and see in the area? I would be
extremely grateful for any help you could give me.
Yours faithfully,
TASK 1:
Last week you saw a new film. Write an e-mail about the film to your English friend (at least 120 words)
and speak about the following: • write about the film (story, location, actors …) • why you liked/did not
like the film • where you like watching films: in the cinema, or at home on TV/DVD (why) • if you prefer
watching films alone or together with others (why)
Dear Lily,
I can’t wait to write to you to tell about a new film that I saw last night named “Shutter Island”. I saw it in
the cinema with my brother. I really looked forward to the film because it featured one of my favorite
actors - Leonardo Dicaprio. It’s a thriller and detective movie.
As a detective movie fan, you should not miss this film because it is very exciting and intriguing. Besides,
it was a little bit scary. It made my hair stand on end many times. I recommend you see it in the cinema
because you cannot enjoy it to the fullest on TV or DVD. You should invite somebody to the film so that
you are not alone during jumpscare scenes! You will love the film because the plot is great and the
performance of every actor and actress is excellent. Moreover, the music of the film is wonderful.
After you see it, don’t forget to tell me what you think. I’m eager to discuss the film with you.
Love,
TASK 1:
Do you often have arguments with your parents? I do. My mother thinks that I spend too much time
hanging around with my friends. Do you often meet your friends?
What do you usually do together? And what do you do when you disagree with your parents about
how you spend your free time?
Write back to Mary. In your letter: answer her question - ask 3 questions about her relations with her
younger sister.
Dear Mary,
Thanks for your letter. I’m glad to hear that you are well.
I’m sorry you had arguments with your parents. As for me, actually I no problems with mine, but we also
have quarrels sometimes because I forget to tidy my room or spend too much time watching TV.
However, after that, I try to talk to them and find the solution. I can meet my friends twice a week on
Fridays and Sundays and we usually play volleyball together. It’s our favorite sport.
And how do you get on with your sister? Do you spend much time being together? Do you help her with
her homework? I wish I had a sister or a brother!
Anyway, everything will be alright, so keep smiling whatever happens! I’d better go now as I’ve got loads
of homework (and housework) to do.
TASK 1:
You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend Harry who writes:
At school we are doing projects on famous singers from different countries. Could you telI me about
any famous Vietnamese singers ? What is he or she famous for? How long has he/she been singing?
Do you enjoy his/her songs? Have you ever been to his/her concerts?
As for my school trip to New York last week, it was really wonderful...
Write back to Harry. In your letter: tell him about the singer you admire most of all - ask 3 questions
about his trip to New York.
Dear Harry,
Thank you for your letter. It sounds like you had a great time in New York, doesn’t it? Which city
attractions did you visit? What impressed you most of all? Did you take any pictures?
I’m glad I can help you with your project on famous singers. Well, my favorite singer is My Tam. She
made her debut in 1999 with the first demo song named “Please, dear”, so she has already been singing
for 20 years. My Tam is one of the most famous pop singers in Vietnam and she is known for her songs
such as “I Wish” and “The Guitar of Students”. I enjoy her songs because of her beautiful voice.
Unfortunately, I’ve never been to her concerts but I’d love to.
Anyway, let me know if you have any other questions. I’d better go now as I have to do the laundry.
Your friend,
TASK 1:
On a recent holiday, you lost a valuable item. Fortunately, you have travel insurance to cover the cost of
anything lost.
Write a letter to the manager of your insurance company. In your letter: describe the item you lost -
explain how you lost it - tell the insurance company what you would like them to do
I am writing to inform you that I have recently lost my watch while traveling in Thailand. It is a silver-
colored Rolex Datejust 41 watch and cost €5621 when I bought it new last month and I still keep the bill.
Its case diameter is 41 mm with a steel bracelet and buckle and I kept it in a black box which engraved
the brand name Rolex and my name.
I lost it when I was having dinner in a restaurant called Salathip in at 89 New Road, Bangkok. I had been
at the restaurant for around one hour when I noticed it was missing.
I am entitled to make a claim for the value of the above-mentioned item and request that you send me
details on what I need to do in order to proceed.
Yours sincerely,
TASK 1:
You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend Ron who writes:
...and then there’s this chess tournament on Saturday. If I win, I’ll be the champion of our school. Who
knows?
Oh, yeah. I wanted to ask you something. We have to write a report on technology for school. Could
you tell me a few things about how you use technology in your life? You know, computers, mobiles,
TV, that sort of thing. Oh, and tell me something about the other members of your family, too, and
how they use technology.
Anyway, I was talking to Anna the other day and she says that...
Write back to Rob. In your letter: answer his questions - ask 3 questions about playing chess
Dear Ron,
It was great to hear from you! I’m glad you managed to talk to Anna. Please give my greetings to her.
You asked me about technology gadgets. Well, I’ve got a new smartphone. It’s got a camera so I’m taking
lots of pictures at the moment. I can also access the Internet on it. In addition, I’ve got a laptop but I use
it mainly for study purposes, for example making presentations, writing essays and doing research. Of
course, we’ve got things like a TV, a smart TV box to connect the TV to the Internet and a PlayStation
game machine. My parents usually watch TV whereas my brother spends many hours a day playing video
games.
By the way, I’m glad you’ve made such progress in chess. Is it difficult to learn how to play it? Will I be
able to teach myself? How can I get started?
Best regards,
TASK 1:
...I find it a bit difficult to understand English grammar. What about you? Do you do grammar
exercises? Do you think that it’s necessary to remember all grammar rules?
Have you got any plans for the summer? I was thinking of going to a language school in the UK to
improve my English. It would be a lot more fun if we went together. What do you think?
Write back to Akiko. In your letter: answer her questions - ask 3 questions about the trip to the UK
Dear Akiko,
Thanks for your letter. I’m glad you have got an excellent score for the Math test.
I agree with you that English grammar is rather hard so I think it’s vital to learn grammar rules and to
practise it by doing exercises. As for me, after reading a topic in the grammar book, I will do all the
related exercises. I do it on a regular basis.
In my opinion, going to a language school is a great idea and I would love to go with you. We could
practice our English and visit lots of city attractions. I haven’t got any plans for this summer, but I need to
ask my parents first and I will inform you if they allow me to go or not. Anyway, I would like to know
what’s on your mind about the language school. Which course would you like to do? What level do you
think we are? Where would you prefer to stay?
Best regards,
TASK 1:
You have received a letter from your English pen-friend Alan who writes
In your previous letter Von told me that you had joined a literature club. I wonder what you do at your
club meetings. Can I help you in any way? As for me, I enjoy reading very much and / would be really
interested to know about famous Vietnamese writers. Who is your favorite writer at the moment?
Have you got enough time for reading?
Write a letter to Alan. In your letter: answer her questions and tell him about your literature club- ask 3
questions about his reading preferences
Dear Alan,
It was great to hear from you again! I’m glad you have been doing well.
In your letter, you asked me about our literature club. Well, at our club meetings, we share our views on
books we’ve read and do projects on popular writers and poets. I think you can help me with the topics
about English Literature. I’ve always admired some English writers such as William Shakespeare and
William Blake. I think you must have studied about them and their books at school.
My favorite Vietnamese writer is Nguyen NhatAnh, who was one of the most best-selling Vietnamese
writers in recent years. I love the books he wrote for children and teenagers, such as “Give me a ticket
back to Childhood” and “Kaleidoscope”. Unfortunately, I don’t have much time for reading as I’m too
busy with my study now.
By the way, it’d be great if you could help me with my project at our literature club. What kind of books
do you enjoy? What book are you reading now? Who is your favorite writer?
Well, I’d better go now. There is a movie starting in a minute. Keep in touch!
Your friend,
TASK 1:
You have received a letter from your bank, asking you to acknowledge receipt of a new bank card.
However, the card was missing from the envelope.
Write an email to the bank's head office. In your letter: explain why you are writing - express concern
about the missing card - ask them what they intend to do
I am writing with regard to a missing or stolen debit card from your bank. This is an urgent matter as it
will lead to negative consequences if the bank card is in the hands of the wrong person.
I received a letter from your bank's head office this morning. It clearly stated that it enclosed my new
bank card and asked me to inform you if I had received it. However, the envelope seemed to have
already been torn when it arrived in my mailbox. What concerned me more was that the debit card was
not enclosed. I checked my mailbox several times but found nothing. I am worried that someone has
opened the envelope and possibly stolen the card.
Therefore, I request that you terminate the existing debit card immediately. The debit card in question is
related to my account number 34354322 at your Hanoi branch. After it has been canceled, please send
me a new one as soon as possible because I may need to use it during my overseas trip next week.
Yours sincerely,

By the way, we are doing a project at college on the fashion industry in different countries. It would be
nice if you could tell me what clothes are popular with teenagers in Vietnam. Do you have any special
fashion for teens? What kind of clothes do you prefer? Write back soon. All my love, Timmy
Write a letter to Timmy. In your letter: answer his questions - ask 3 questions about his tastes in clothes
Dear Timmy,
I was so happy to receive your letter. It was great to hear your news.
In your letter you asked me about popular teenage clothes in Vietnam. Well, I guess today’s teenagers
have a new tagline, ‘I can wear anything I want.’ Unisex fashion has become trendy in the recent years.
You can see in urban areas, more and more boys wear colorful and flower-patterned clothes, earrings
and handbags when girls wear pants, jeans, tuxedos and other items that previously worn by male. As
for me, I’m not a person who follows fashion trend. I always enjoy a popular layered style and I usually
wear black trousers, white shirts and open cardigans as they’re very comfortable and easy to be
combined with different accessories.
Anyway, write back and tell me about your tastes in clothes. What kind of clothes do you prefer? Do you
follow any fashion trends? Do you enjoy wearing a school uniform?
Well, I’d better go now as I have to do my homework. Take care and keep in touch!
Best wishes,

You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend Nancy who writes
In your letter you said you were organizing a surprise party for your friend. Was it difficult to organize?
Did you decorate the place? What kind of food did you provide? What did your friend say? I’d love to
hear how it went because my parents let me have a big party at home on my birthday but I’ve got to
organize everything myself I’ve never done anything like that before.
Write a letter to Nancy. In your letter: answer her questions giving relevant details - ask 3 questions
about her birthday party
Dear Nancy,
It was great to receive your letter and to learn the latest news! I wish you a happy birthday and many
happy returns of the day!
In your letter, you asked me about how to organize a surprise party. Well, actually it wasn’t very difficult.
A friend of mine offered her a flat for the party because her parents went on a business trip. We
decorated it with flowers, balloons and streamers. We also bought a birthday cake, fruit and some coke.
We sang the “Happy Birthday” song, then danced and played different games, such as “Truth or Dare?”
and some board games. Our friend was excited. She said she had never had such a great party before. I
hope this will help you to organize an unforgettable party too.
Anyway, write back soon and tell me how your birthday party went. Did you have many guests? What did
you do? Did you enjoy your party?
Lots of love,
TASK 1:
You eat at your company canteen at lunchtime every day. However, you think it needs some
improvements. Write a letter to the head of the Admin Department in your company. In your letter:
explain what you like about the canteen - say what is wrong with it - suggest how it could be improved
I am writing with regard to our company canteen. Since almost every employee spends some time here
every day, I believe it is in everyone's best interest to find ways to improve the quality of this central
eatery.
The canteen itself is modern, spacious and attractive. The seating area provides an open, airy and
outdoor feeling which makes it very pleasant to eat meals there. This is further enhanced by the large
green plants and flowing water fountains.
The main problem with the canteen is in the food served. First of all, there is a very limited selection
available. If we don’t choose to eat rice, we can only choose instant noodles. Sometimes there are days
that we want to eat something other than rice. It would be wonderful to have some choices like
hamburgers, beef or chicken noodles, pizzas and spaghetti added to the menu. Secondly, the prices are a
little bit too high at the moment. We have unfortunately seen two price hikes in the last two years.
I am sure if we offer a wider range of foods, at better prices, the canteen will continue to run profitably
as more employees choose to eat there.
Yours faithfully,

You have recently started work in a new company. Write a letter to an English-speaking friend. In your
letter: explain why you changed jobs - describe your new job - tell him / her your other news
Dear Anna,
How are you? I hope you've been well. Sorry for having been out of touch for a short while. There have
been some changes in my life and I wanted to let you know the latest from my side.
The big news is that I have finally changed my job! Do you remember when you were here on holiday, I
always talked about how I hated my boring office job? Well, it was clear I needed a change. So, finally, I
took a vocational class in the evening and trained to be a make-up artist. Now I'm having a self-employed
business. I do the make-up for brides, models and whoever wants to look more beautiful on a specific
day. Each day, I look forward to going to work. Most of my customers are lovely and I really enjoy
beautifying them. I am a much happier person today because of these recent changes.
So, how about you? I hope you'll have a chance to visit Hanoi again soon. In the meantime, please write
and let me know what's new with you.
Lots of love,
