THUMBS UP! THUMBS DOWN! ACTIVITY
The teacher will read statements about certain topics.
The students will express their feelings toward the statements by the
show of thumbs. Thumbs up if they agree, and thumbs down if
otherwise.
1. Students should get a reward if they stay out of trouble and do well in
school.
2. Mining companies that destroy the environment must be closed
even if it would mean job loss to many.
3. Death penalty must be approved.
4. Oplan Tukhang is an effective method to stop drug-related crimes.
5. Schools should exercise rigid security measures during field trips.
6. Students must be aware on the importance of school attendance.
7. Wearing a school uniform is a CHOICE.
Analysis
The students will be grouped into four, assigning a leader for each.
GROUP ACTIVITY ‘Pick a Side’
Each group will be asked to pick a side in a given issue. Five minutes
will be given to each group to brainstorm and come up with
evidences/reasons to support their side. Finally, one minute will be
given to every group leader to tell the class of the group’s output.

Should elementary pupils and high school students be allowed to have cell
phones in schools?

Is it appropriate for students and teachers to be friends on Facebook?

Should boys and girls be in separate classes?
Issue # 4
Should everyone under the age of 17 have a 9:00 pm curfew?
Each group leader will discuss in class their output.
The teacher will ask the following questions to facilitate learning.
1. What did we do in our activity? We pick a side in every issue.
2. How did you pick your side in each issue? I have
reasons/evidences for picking such.
Abstraction
The teacher will give the meaning/concept of position paper. Further,
the format of writing the paper will also be given.

WRITING ACTIVITY
The students are going to write an introduction about this issue.
Should students’ textbooks be replaced by notebook computers
and other gadgets of similar kind?
The teacher will assess the students by the use of
