What is It

Rules in Diagnosing Computer System

1. Know the facts

10
1.1. Educate oneself on all aspects and operation of computer parts.
1.2. Continuous learning on computer technology

2. Use your common sense

3. Focus on Field Replaceable Units
3.1 Identify the different types of FRU that can be used for replacement or
sub assembly.
4. Proper assembly and disassembly
5. Factors Causing Computer Failures and Defects
5.1 People ware
Untrained personnel would probably damage programs in PC.
5.2 Firmware
Programs or software burnt in chips may be corrupted.
5.3 Software
Corrupted operating systems would cause the system to fail.
5.4 Hardware
Defective hardware components would lead to computer
malfunction.
Hardware conflicts and viruses can hinder your computers’
performance.
6. Check the POST. POST stands for Power On Self-Test. This is generally the first
or second thing that appears on a computer after turning on the power. This
appears before the operating system begins to load.

A. Speeding Up the Process

Here are a list of recommended diagnostic programs for you. A diagnostic

program is a software tool used to diagnose problems with a particular set of
hardware devices.

1. CPU-Z

11
CPU-Z is a program that scans your system for its internal hardware
configuration. It is indispensable if you ever want to upgrade your PC parts and
want to avoid incompatibility issues.

2. Performance Monitor

As in older versions of the operating system, Windows 10 has a Performance

Monitor, except now it exists as an app. Once launched, look at the sidebar. Under
Monitoring Tools, you should see Performance Monitor.
By default, the Monitor only shows “% Processor Time” which displays how
much of your CPU is used at any given time, but you can add more counters such
as disk usage, energy used, paging file size, search index size, and more.

3. Reliability Monitor

12
The Reliability Monitor is a hidden tool that has been around since Windows
Vista, yet so many people have never even heard of it. It is in the Control Panel
under System & Security > Security & Maintenance > Maintenance > View
reliability history.

Here you will see a history of your system and a timeline of events and errors
that occurred during a given time period. The blue line is an estimate from 1 to 10
of how stable your system is over time.

If something is crashing a lot, this is a good place to look because you can
select the error and check for a solution.

4. WiFi Analyzer

WiFi Analyzer is a free tool that does exactly what its name says: it analyzes
your Wi-Fi network’s setup to see whether your wireless channel is interfering with
other nearby Wi-Fi networks.

Once analyzed, it will recommend a channel setting for you. It is not perfect,
especially in crowded apartments and dense cities, but in some cases, it can boost
your Wi-Fi speed and reliability by a significant amount.

13
5. Angry IP Scanner

Angry IP Scanner is a nice tool to have. In a nutshell, it scans your network

to see which IP addresses and ports are being used by which devices.

You can use it at home to see how many devices are connected to your
network (to check if anyone is mooching off of your Internet) or to find the IP
address of a specific device (such as your smartphone).

6. Resource Monitor

Windows has a feature called the Resource Monitor, which was implemented
back in Vista. Traditionally, you’d have to launch it through the Task Manager, but
it’s now a separate app in Windows 10 that you can launch through the Start
Menu.

14
The Resource Monitor is an advanced way to view real-time data about your
system and is usually used in conjunction with the Performance Monitor. However,
I mainly use it for viewing process details and memory usage. Indeed, it is one of
the easiest ways to troubleshoot RAM problems.

7. Windows Memory Diagnostic

Did you know Windows has a built-in tool that can physically test your RAM
modules to check if they are free of errors? It is an app called Windows Memory
Diagnostic.

Using it will restart your computer. On boot up, the tool will run several
tests on your RAM, and if it encounters any errors or failures, it will do its best to
let you know which module is the culprit. You should replace that module ASAP.

8. JScreenFix

15
Look carefully at your screen. Do you see any spots that are not caused by
flecks of dust? If so, you may have a stuck pixel, which is a pixel that is stuck on a
certain color.

JScreenFix is a web tool that can help. All it does is flash the area of the
screen with the stuck pixel with hundreds of different colors every second. This
should unstick the pixel after about ten minutes.

Does it always work? No. Sometimes a stuck pixel will be stuck forever due
to a physical defect in the screen. But JScreenFix has a success rate over 60
percent, so give it a try if you have a stuck pixel of your own.1

9. MalwareBytes

MalwareBytes has been the king of malware scanners for many years now.
Most people have heard of it at least once, but if you have not, know that a lot of
folks consider this a must-have application on every computer.

Note that MalwareBytes comes in both “Free” and “Premium” versions. The
“Free” version is great, of course, and it is more than enough for most home users,
but the “Premium” version has all kinds of advanced features that are awesome as
well.

B. Diagnosing Network Connection

Things to look for if a PC is connected to the internet or network:

1. First check the cable connecting to the network card into the network
hub.
2. Check the back of the computer to see if the network card light is on
3. Check the network cable (use cable tester)
4. Check the network HUB (use multi-tester)

https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-software-solutions-to-fix-a-stuck-pixel-on-your-lcd-monitor/.

16
C. Operating System (OS) errors

1. System errors - These are moderately dangerous types of errors among

those that can pop up on your PC. System errors are caused by
malfunctioning hardware components, corrupted operating system modules,
etc.

2. Runtime errors - Runtime errors are caused by corrupted or malfunctioning

system files or software executables. Most runtime errors cause the
application that caused it to shut down. However, more serious runtime
errors may cause the system to become unstable or unresponsive, leaving
you with no choice but to reach for the Reset button.

3. Stop errors - Stop errors are caused by corrupted hardware, especially

malfunctioning RAM modules and bad sectors on hard disks. Stop errors
can be difficult to resolve at times.

4. Device Manager Errors - These are usually caused by corrupted driver files
or malfunctioning hardware components. In case of the former cause, the
problem is usually solved simply by reinstalling or updating the drivers.
However, the latter cause can often be solved only by replacing hardware
components.

5. POST code errors - POST code errors are caused by malfunctioning

hardware components, and are characterized by short beep sounds from the
tiny internal speaker of your motherboard. POST code errors occur when
you press the power button to turn on your PC.

6. Application errors - These can be caused at any point of time. As the name
suggests, these are caused by applications while those are running. These
are usually caused by glitches in the program code itself. These are usually
resolved by updating the program to its latest version.

7. Browser Status Codes - These are caused by problems faced by browsers

when trying to access a website. These can be caused by misplaced web
pages in the server of the website itself, or due to connection problems. For
instance, a 404 error would indicate that the browser is trying to access a
webpage that does not exist in the specified location.

17
What’s More

Independent Activity 1. Give me FIVE!

The following are computer terms you need to identify and understand in order to
isolate and identify faults in the computer system. As a kickstarter, listed below are
five related terms for you to define in your own words. You may seek the internet or

What I Have Learned

The most basic test is to switch the system on to check if it starts without errors.
ICT professionals are also likely to use tools and utilities to check that all is well
with the system after an installation.

1. Diagnostic tools are used to test and diagnose equipment.

2. Software tools like hardware tools, have a variety of tools that can be used
to help technicians pinpoint and troubleshoot problems. Many of these tools
are free and several come with the Windows operating system.
3. Disk Management Tools help diagnose computer and network problems
and determine which computer device is not functioning correctly. A
technician must be able to use a range of software tools to diagnose
problems, maintain hardware, and protect the data stored on a computer.

The following are some disk management tools:

1. FDISK 5. Defrag
2. Disk Management Tool 6. Disk Cleanup
3. Format 7. System File Checker (SFC)
4. ScanDisk or CHKDSK

Test procedures are created in-house and could include these steps:

1. Gathering test information. The first step is to run the tests required by
the procedure and find out what happens. You should record all the results
of your tests in a log so that you know which passed and which failed,
thereby requiring further action.

2. Validating the test information. The next step is to check the data you
gathered from the tests to make sure it is correct. This is usually done by
running the tests again.

3. Responding to test information. This step is important because you need

to be able to recognize when a test shows problems or is successful. For
example, if ping is used to test a network connection then ‘Request timed
out’ shows the test was not successful.

4. Checking specification. The final step is an important end to testing. You

need to check the specification for the installation to make sure that it has
been met.

following phases, most accurately the Design phase which should finally define the
total project's costs, which are still tentative. Its purpose is to convince the client's
decision makers to proceed with the project, and to gain their consensus about the
best way to proceed.

Further sections may include the following:

I. Features of the proposed system

II. Benefits -both tangible and intangible
III. Costs (amount)
IV. Specification
V. Summary

Imagine that a client needs a computer system for his child because the old
computer broke down. This will be a part of the contingency measures in
maintaining computer systems in which computers cannot be repaired anymore.
