QUARTER 1: LEARNING MODULE # 5
GENERAL MATHEMATICS 11
LESSON 9: UNDERSTANDING EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An exponential function is a function in which the variable is in the exponents. It is in
form f (x)=a x, where “ x ” is a variable and “a ” is a constant which is called the base of
the function and it should be greater than 0.
What is the difference of Exponential function, Exponential equation, and Exponential
inequality?
An exponential function is a function in which the variable is in the exponents. It
is in form f ( x)=a x.
Examples of Exponential Function
1. f (x)=3x
2. f (x)=0.35 x−7
3. f (x)=(−0.9 )5 x
An exponential equation is an equation involving exponential expression.
Examples of Exponential equation
1. 5 x =32
x 1
2. 3 =
9
x+1
3. 2 =64
4. 252 x =125
An exponential inequality is an inequality involving exponential expressions.
Examples of Exponential inequality
1. 5 x+4 ≤ 52 x−1
2. 2 x+3 >4 x−5
3. 54 ≥ 252 x
Graphs of Exponential Functions
Properties of the Graphs of an Exponential function f (x)=a x.
a. The function is one-to-one.
b. The graph passes through (0, 1).
c. The graph is asymptotic to the x-axis.
d. The function is increasing when a> 1.
e. The function is decreasing when 0< b<1.
Example 1: Sketch the graph of f (x)=2x .
Step 1: Make a table of values.
