SYSTEM

ADMINISTRATOR
AND MAINTENANCE
LECTURE 1: INTRODUCTION Prepared by: Ms. Rizza Mae C. Brao
Network Administrator
A Network Administrator is responsible for managing,
maintaining, and supporting an organization's computer
networks, including local area networks (LAN), wide
area networks (WAN), and internet systems. Their
duties include configuring routers and switches,
ensuring network security, troubleshooting
connectivity issues, and ensuring the network operates
efficiently and securely.
Database Administrator (DBA)
A Database Administrator is responsible for the
management and maintenance of an organization's
databases. This includes ensuring the database is
secure, backed up, and optimized for performance.
DBAs also handle database creation, configuration,
troubleshooting, and recovery, and they implement
database security measures to protect data integrity
and privacy.
Security Administrator:
A Website Administrator manages the operation and
content of a website. They are responsible for ensuring
the website runs smoothly, including overseeing the
technical aspects (e.g., hosting, software, and security)
as well as updating and managing website content.
They work to ensure the website’s uptime,
functionality, and user experience are optimized.
System Administrator

refers to the tasks and responsibilities involved in

maintaining, configuring, and ensuring the smooth
operation of computer systems, networks, and IT
infrastructure. This includes both hardware and
software aspects to ensure reliable performance,
security, and efficiency.
WHAT IS: SYSTEM
ADMINISTRATOR
AND MAINTENANCE
OBJECTIVE
To learn the basic functions of installing,
configuring, and managing a network
operating system, with a focus on
Windows Server Administration tools.
1. Introduction to System
Administration
System administration is the process of managing and maintaining a
computer system, network, or server environment. This includes
installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network operating
systems, as well as ensuring that they run efficiently and securely.
In this lesson, we will dive into the tools and technologies used to
manage Windows Server environments.
2. WINDOWS SERVER
ADMINISTRATION
TOOLSRATURE REVIEW
Windows Server offers a set of powerful administration tools
that enable system administrators to perform tasks such as
configuration, management, and troubleshooting. Let's break
down these tools:
2. WINDOWS SERVER
ADMINISTRATION
TOOLSRATURE REVIEW
a) Remote vs. Local Administration
Local Administration: Managing servers and workstations directly, usually
by logging into the machine physically or through remote desktop.
Remote Administration: Performing administrative tasks from a remote
location, often through secure protocols or using remote tools.
Using remote tools can significantly improve efficiency and reduce the need
for physically being near a server or machine.
2. WINDOWS SERVER
ADMINISTRATION

b) Privileged Access Workstation (PAW)
A Privileged Access Workstation (PAW) is a computer that is used by
administrators for performing sensitive or high-level tasks. The idea behind
PAW is to separate administrative tasks from regular user activities, thereby
reducing the attack surface and enhancing security.
Key Concept: PAWs should be isolated and locked down to ensure they
aren’t compromised.
2. WINDOWS SERVER
ADMINISTRATION
TOOLSRATURE REVIEW
c) RSAT (Remote Server Administration Tools)
RSAT allows system administrators to remotely manage Windows Servers from a
client machine. It provides a set of management tools that administrators can use
to configure and maintain server environments from their desktop or laptop.
Tools included in RSAT:
Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC)
DHCP Server Management
DNS Server Management
Group Policy Management
RSAT is an essential tool for administrators who need to manage Windows servers
remotely.
3. CONSOLE TOOLS FOR
WINDOWS SERVER
a) Server Manager Console
Server Manager is the main interface for managing Windows
Server roles and features. It is used to add or remove roles,
monitor server health, and perform basic configuration
tasks.
You can also launch other tools like the Active Directory or
Group Policy Management from Server Manager.
It provides a comprehensive view of your server’s status,
including system events, performance, and roles installed.
3. CONSOLE TOOLS FOR
WINDOWS SERVER
b) PowerShell
PowerShell is a powerful command-line tool and scripting language
used to automate tasks and manage Windows environments. For
system administrators, PowerShell is indispensable for performing
complex tasks in a more efficient and consistent manner.
PowerShell Modules: These are collections of cmdlets (commands)
that extend PowerShell’s functionality. For example, modules for
Active Directory, DNS, or Exchange Server.
PowerShell Gallery: The PowerShell Gallery is an online repository
of reusable scripts, modules, and functions for managing Windows
and other environments.
