TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FOR HAND DRAWN ANIMATION

PENCIL Is used to rough out first key drawings. HB or B pencil is needed for
clean drawings, while colored pencil is used for roughing out the animation.

CLUTCH PENCIL Is used for clean-up drawings. Often used by the animators,
because it does not have to be continuously sharpened.

SHARPENER Is used to sharpen a pencil's lead by shaving away its wood surface.

ERASER Is used to remove pencil markings on the paper. It is important for an


animator to have an eraser to rub out lead cleanly.

BRUSH Is used to get rid of any carbon dust or eraser pieces.

MASKING TAPE Is used to secure animation papers or for taping down the peg
bar.

MIRROR Is used to catch the right facial expression for a character.

ANIMATION PAPER Usually comes in field sizes, either 12 x 15. However, A4 size
is commonly used.
ANIMATION LIGHT BOX - It is used to clearly through all the layers of drawings.

ANIMATION DISC Is a drawing disc placed on a light box and used to work out
camera moves and panning walk cycles.

CAMERA RIG Is made up of metal frame to hold and control the camera without
shaking when being used.

CAMCORDER Is used to record and store images that will be imported to the
computer

SCANNER Is used as an alternative device to camera.

Key Animation are poses drawn by the animator representing the action &
narrative required by their scene / sequence

Layout guide to the positions of the elements in the scene and their size
relationship to each other & to the location of the scenee
Exposure Sheet chart that shows frame by frame of all drawings of every
animated scene

Model Sheet (turn arounds, expressions, mouths, charts) a reference sheet of an


animator that shows hows how a character is constructed and how they would
pose

Storyboard visual narrative of the script in the form of thumbnail drawings that
shows the different scenes organized in a sequence of panels

CHARACTER MODEL final reference of the construction, proportion, & unique


details of any given character

CHARACTER EXPRESSIONS shows the local expressions that represent emotions


of the character

CHARACTER ATTITUDES shows the different behaviors, moods, & attitudes of the
character

MOUTH CHARTS shows the breakdowns of the mouth movement into at least 8
different mouths.

TURN AROUNDS all the different views of a character. It is used as reference in a


modeling the character during the animation process

ACTION BREAKDOWN a rough sketch at the center mark of in-betweens


provided by the animator for the use of the in-betweener.
