Pakistan is experiencing widespread internet slowdowns that have impacted millions of
users, drawing nationwide complaints. The disruptions began in February, following a
government crackdown ahead of elections. Users report issues with social media access,
email, and messaging apps like WhatsApp, hindering both businesses and daily routines.
The Pakistan Software House Association warns the disruptions could cost the economy
$300 million and blames a hastily implemented national firewall. Meanwhile, the
government denies any involvement, with Minister for Information Shiza Fatima
attributing the slowdown to VPN use.
Critics, however, remain skeptical. Digital rights activists and users demand
transparency, questioning the government’s explanation and seeking clarity on whether
the slowdown is linked to security measures.
With 110 million internet users affected, the situation adds to Pakistan’s ongoing political
tensions.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has rescheduled the observance of Ninoy Aquino Day
from Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024 to Friday, Aug. 23, 2024.
In a newly issued Proclamation 665, Malacañang said the move allows for a long
weekend. It also facilitates domestic tourism while maintaining the commemoration’s
historical significance, it said.
The holiday has been observed annually on August 21 as a commemoration of the
assassination of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., a senator and opposition leader during the
regime of Marcos’s father, Ferdinand Marcos.
It is still considered a special non-working holiday despite the move. This suggests that
employees who render work are paid 30% more for the day.
Marcos also directed the Department of Labor and Employment to issue a circular to
implement the proclamation for the private sector.

Filipino pole vaulter plunged back into action in his first tournament since the Paris
Olympics and even fared better, finishing joint-third in the Lausanne Diamond League
meet on Wednesday (Thursday Manila time).
Obiena cleared 5.82 meters on his first try to share the bronze medal with Norway’s
Sondre Guttormsen and Australia’s Kurtis Marschall in the tournament.
The 28-year-old Filipino opened his stint by overcoming 5.62m, bypassing 5.35m and
5.52m, as well as 5.72m. He failed to clear 5.92m.He narrowly missed the podium in
Paris, ending up at fourth place, and his bronze finish on Wednesday should serve as a
confidence-booster as he resumes his career.

their first film collaboration since their 2020 movie “Block Z” and a 2019 breakup, with
their time apart contributing to their mature approach to their roles.
The narrative follows Juancho and Zy, exes seeking closure from their past relationship.
Julia and Joshua find their chemistry intact, with Julia describing her character as
restrained and caring, while Joshua relates to his character’s pain but handles it
