COMPARATIVES

 The comparative of a word is the form we use when we compare two things (or groups of things).

 Comparatives are used with adjectives, adverbs, and nouns to show differences between two subjects (people,
objects, ideas, places, or actions).

 Comparatives are often used in compare-contrast essays, or to offer personal opinions.

Comparative: 비교급의
Adjective: 형용사
Adverb: 부사
Noun: 명사
FORM

Comparatives with Adjectives and Adverbs


▪ To form the comparative of one-syllable adjectives and adverbs, add –er.
➢ David is taller than Ian.
➢ A cheetah is faster than a lion.
▪ If the adjective or adverb ends in a single vowel and consonant, double the consonant.
➢ The weather in summer is hotter than the weather in winter.
➢ An elephant is bigger than a mouse.
▪ To form the comparative of most two-syllable adjectives and adverbs, add more.
➢ A car is more expensive than a bicycle.
▪ however, if the adjective ends in –le, use –r.
➢ Life in the country is simpler than life in the city.
▪ If the adjective ends in a consonant + y, change y to ier.
