Hockey- Our
National Game
Hockey is one of the oldest and most
popular sports in the world. It is a fast-paced
game played between two teams, where
players use a curved stick to hit a ball and
score goals.
In India, hockey holds a special place as it was
once the most dominant sport in the
country. The Indian men's hockey team has
historically been one of the strongest in the
world, winning multiple Olympic gold medals.
Due to its rich legacy and impact, hockey is
often considered India's national game.

History of Hockey
Field hockey is a popular game possibly depicted on walls
in Egypt. Drawings of what looks to be hockey have been found in
an Egyptian tomb that was 4000 years old. Hockey is a popular
game in India and Pakistan. It was played for hundreds of years
before other countries like England modernized it. Hockey is
similar to an ancient game played in Scotland called shinty.
Hockey is often played at schools in the UK but its origins are
unclear. Later came ice hockey, which developed in Canada.

When and how hockey became
popular in India
Hockey became popular in India during the British
colonial era, when the sport was introduced to the
country by British soldiers and gradually gained
widespread acceptance due to its accessibility and
large playing fields, with the first hockey club in
India being established in Calcutta (now Kolkata)
around 1855; the sport further gained momentum
with tournaments like the Beighton Cup and Aga
Khan tournament, eventually leading to the
formation of the Indian Hockey Federation in 1925,
marking a significant step in the sport's
development in India.

rich history, incredible dominance in the sport at the
international level, particularly during the mid-20th century,
where India won multiple Olympic gold medals, and the deep

it is not officially declared as the national game; making it a
