Q1. (11 Marks)


You are provided with:
Saturated solution W of H2C2O4.2H2O at 19oC, 0.15M sodium hydroxide solution P,
phenolphthalein indicator.

You are required to:


Determine the solubility of H2C2O4.2H2O at 19oC.

PROCEDURE
(i) Transfer exactly 25.0cm3 of the saturated solution W into a volumetric flask by means
of a pipette and pipette filler and add water from a wash bottle until the 250ml mark and
label this as solution W1.

(ii) Rinse the Pipette and transfer 25.0 cm 3 of solution P into a conical flask, add 2 drops
of phenolphthalein indicator and titrate using solution W1 from the burette. Record your
values in the table 1 below. Repeat the procedure to obtain concordant titres.

You are provided with solid A of Barium hydroxide weighing 4.0g, solution E
hydrochloric acid.

You are required to;


Determine the heat of reaction between barium hydroxide and carbon (IV) oxide gas.

PROCEDURE II (a)

(i) Using a 100ml measuring cylinder, measure 30 cm 3 of hydrochloric acid Solution


E and place it in a 250ml plastic beaker.
(ii) Measure the temperature of the hydrochloric acid and record in Table 2.
(iii) Add all of the solid A provided to solution E. Stir with the thermometer and
measure the final temperature reached. Record the reading in Table 2.

(ii) Repeat procedure II (a) using the barium carbonate solid B which weighs 5.6g

your observations and inferences in the spaces provided.

a) Place two thirds of solid C in a clean test tube. Add 10cm3 of distilled water and
shake. Divide the solution in into 4 portions.

PREPARATION OF SOLUTIONS

(1) Barium nitrate solution is prepared by dissolving 26.0g of solid barium nitrate in
about 800cm3 of distilled d water and diluting to one litre of solution. Label this as
aqueous barium nitrate.

(2) Lead (II) nitrate is prepared by dissolving 33.0g of solid lead (II) nitrate in about
800 cm3 of distilled water and diluting to eon litre of solution. Label this as aqueous lead
(II) nitrate in about 800cm3 of distilled water and diluting to one litre of solution. Label
this as aqueous lead (II) nitrate.

(3) Sodium hydroxide solution is prepared by dissolving 80.0g of solid sodium


hydroxide in about 800cm3 of distilled d water and diluting to one litre of solution.
Label this as aqueous sodium hydroxide.

(4) Acidified potassium dichromate (VI) solution is prepared by dissolving 30.0g of


solid potassium dichromate (VI) in about 200 cm3 of 2M sulphuric (VI) acid followed
by about 600 cm3 of distilled water in a one litre volumetric flask, then adding more
distilled water to the mark. Label this as acidified potassium dichromate (VI).

(5) Acidified potassium manganate (VII) solution. This is prepared by dissolving


3.0g of solid potassium manganate (VII) in about 200 cm3 of 2M sulphuric (VI) acid
followed by 600 cm3 of distilled in a one litre volumetric flask, then adding more distilled
water to make up to the mark. Label this as acidified potassium manganate (VII) solution.
