MICRO PROJECT REPORT
BUILD A CIRCUIT TO GENERATE PULSE
POSITION MODULATION (PPM) SIGNAL
1. Introduction
Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) is a digital modulation technique in
which the position of a pulse is varied according to the amplitude of the
modulating signal. It is widely used in communication systems, optical
transmission, and remote-control applications. This project focuses on
designing and implementing a PPM signal generator circuit using a 555
Timer IC and other basic electronic components.
2. Components Required
555 Timer IC
Op-Amp (LM358 or similar, optional for signal conditioning)
Resistors (1kΩ, 10kΩ, 100kΩ)
Capacitors (0.01µF, 1µF, 10µF)
Potentiometer (10kΩ, for adjusting the modulation depth)
Diodes (1N4148 or similar for pulse shaping)
Transistor (BC547, optional for amplification)
Oscilloscope (for waveform observation)
Power Supply (5V or 9V)
PCB or Breadboard
Connecting Wires
3. Circuit Diagram
The circuit consists of:
A 555 Timer IC configured as a monostable multivibrator to
generate pulses.
A modulating signal (e.g., sine wave) that influences the timing of
the pulses.
A capacitor-resistor network that controls the pulse width and
position based on the input signal.
Additional components for pulse shaping and conditioning.
4. Working Principle
1. The input modulating signal (analog waveform) is fed into the
circuit.
2. The 555 Timer IC is triggered at regular intervals, but the timing of
the output pulse is varied based on the amplitude of the modulating
signal.
3. The capacitor and resistor network determine the exact position of
each pulse relative to the previous pulse.
4. As the input signal varies, the pulses shift accordingly, creating a
PPM waveform.
5. The output can be observed using an oscilloscope to verify the
modulation process.
5. Advantages
Efficient bandwidth utilization compared to other modulation
techniques.
Resistant to noise since only pulse position is modulated.
Used in optical and RF communication for effective data
transmission.
Simple circuit design using easily available components.
6. Applications
Wireless communication systems.
Optical fiber data transmission.
Remote control and telemetry.
Radar and military communication.
Biomedical signal processing.
7. Conclusion
This micro-project successfully demonstrates a PPM signal generator
circuit using a 555 Timer IC and passive components. The circuit
provides an efficient and reliable method to generate PPM signals, which
are widely used in communication and signal processing applications. This
setup can be further enhanced with microcontrollers or digital
processing for more advanced implementations.
