ASSIGNMENT NO 6
INTERPOLATION FUNCTIONS
1. A one-dimensional linear element has been used to find the temperature distribution in a straight fin. It
is found that the nodal temperatures of the element are and at nodes and , respectively.
If the nodes and are located and from the origin. Determine an expression for the
temperature variation within the element and use it to determine
(a) the temperature at a point from the origin, and
(b) the temperature gradient inside the element.
2. A bar of length with linearly varying cross-section is shown in Figure P6.2. Its cross-sectional
areas at the left fixed end and the right free end are respectively and . Determine
cross-sectional area of the bar at by the interpolation using linear interpolation functions.
