Tutorials N° 07
Exercise N° 1:
A three-phase load consumes, on a 230V/400V 50Hz three-phase system, a power of
25 kW with a power factor of 0.7 lagging.
1) Calculate the value of capacitors C, connected in star, to raise the power factor to
0.92 lagging.
2) Calculate the value of capacitors C', connected in delta, to raise the power factor
to 0.92 lagging.
3) Calculate the value of capacitors C", connected in delta, to raise the power factor
to 0.92 leading.
4) If the power factor is the same in all three cases, which solution should be
preferred?
Exercise N° 2:
A single-phase workshop consists of three sets of machines, constituting loads 1, 2,
and 3, connected in parallel to the same sinusoidal voltage at 50 Hz with an effective
value of V = 230V. The table below summarizes the measurements made on each of
these loads.
Load 1 Load 2 Load 3
P1 = 20 kW; Q 1 = 15 kVar S2 = 45 kVA; = 0,6 AR S3 = 10 kVA; Q3= -5 kVar
1) Calculate for each load all the electrical quantities characterizing it: current
absorbed, active, reactive, and apparent powers, power factor. These quantities will
be denoted as I1, I2, I3, P1, P2, etc.
2) Deduce the value of the total active power P and total reactive power Q consumed
by the total load. Also, calculate the total apparent power S, the overall power factor,
and the total absorbed current: I.
3) Represent in the complex plane the currents I1, I2, I3, and I. We will create a
diagram without a scale but on which the amplitudes and phases of the vectors will be
noted. The reference phase will be the voltage V.
4) Represent the construction of the power triangle of all these loads.
5) By placing a capacitor C' in parallel with the installation to raise the power factor
to the value: cosφ' = 0.9 leading. Calculate the value of C'.
6) Also calculate the value of C" of a capacitor to obtain a power factor cosφ" = 0.9
lagging.
7) With the power factor having the same value in both cases, which capacitor is chosen
in practice?
