General Outline:
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION:
The work of salvation contains six basic issues that will be developed in some detail throughout this study:
On March 3, 1547, the Council of Trent defined the nature of the sacraments:
"If any one saith, that the sacraments of the New Law are not necessary
unto salvation, but superfluous; and that without them, or without the
desire thereof, men obtain of God, through faith alone grace of
justification; though all are not necessary for every individual; let him be
anathema!"
1B. CALLED - 295 times in NT; Greek verb used 147 times
2C. It is the INITIATION of God Himself - Acts 2:39; Romans 8:29-30; Jude 1
2B. CHOSEN (elected) - to select out of (for oneself) Matthew 22:14; Ephesians 1:4 - used

3B. God's PLAN - He plans to save some out of the many who are given the opportunity to

1A. THE PERSON OF GRACE - "the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ" - used 10 times – cf. Romans

English word "redeem" appears 56 times in the Bible, only twice in the NT; "redemption" appears 20 times
in the Bible, of which 11 times are found in the NT; "redeemed" appears 62 times in the Bible, with only 7
references in the NT; "purchased" appears 9 times with 4 NT references; "purchase" is found 8 times with
one NT usage.
(1) lutroo - 3 times (Luke 24:21; Titus 2:14; I Peter 1:18 ("to loose")
(2) exagorazo - 4 times (Gal. 3:13; 4:5; Eph. 5:16; Colossians. 4:5) ("to buy out of")

The word "repent" is used 22 times in the OT and 24 times in the NT in the King James
Version of the Bible. The word "repented" appears 17 times in the OT and 15 times in the NT,
and the word "repentance" appears once in OT (Hosea 13:14) and 25 times in the NT.
1C. Away from sin - Hebrews 6:1 (apo - from dead works)
2B. It is not merely feeling sorry that you sinned or got caught.
3B. It is described as a gift of God - Acts 5:31; 11: 18; II Timothy 2:25
4B. It is a "godly sorrow" for sin that results in positive action. cf. II Corinthians 7:11

3C. INDIGNATION - Greek word, aganaktesis, appears only here in the NT.
Some believe that it indicates the "pain" which one feels because of
what sin has caused.
4C. FEAR - Greek word, phobos, suggests the attitude toward God, but in
particular, fear of consequences.
5C. VEHEMENT DESIRE - Greek word, epipothesis, used 4 times in NT, all
of which are found in II Cor. 7. I t emphasizes the conviction which the
Holy Spirit has placed upon one's heart.
6C. ZEAL - Greek word, zelos, is a common word to indicate the effort and
desire to stop the sinful behavior and to live a godly life.
2B. Repentance must precede faith - you cannot express confidence in God's Word
until your mind is changed.
