1. INTRODUCTION
Subsoil Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd. has taken on geotechnical investigation
work for Structure at BH-1(A), CH 44+080Km, BH-2(B) CH 44+220Km (RHS), BH-3(C) CH
44+440 Km (RHS), BH-4(D) CH 45+340 Km, BH-5 (E) CH 46+00 Km (RHS), BH-6 Km, CH
47+400 (RHS), Narsingdi. All work done in the field and laboratory will be summarized,
compiled, and submitted along with a soft copy.
100 mm diameter thirteen (6) uncased boreholes will be drilled at site up to maximum
depth of 18.45 m by wash boring method. Standard Penetration Test (SPT) will be
carried out using manual hammer in each borehole at an interval of 1.5 m up to
maximum explored depth. Disturbed soil samples will be collected from recovered soil
from each Split Spoon Barrel during Standard Penetration Test and undisturbed soil
samples will be collected by Shelby Tube sampler from cohesive soil strata only.
Entire SPT operation monitored and digitally recorded in the field by our representative.
2. SCOPE OF WORK
Scope of work under the contract summarized below:
Drilling boreholes.
Conducting SPT and record N-value at intervals specified by the
client’s Engineer.
Disturbed soil sample collection at specified intervals from Split Spoon Barrel.
Undisturbed soil sample collection from each cohesive
layer byShelby Tube whenever possible.
Classification of soil.
Laboratory tests to determine physical properties of soil.
Laboratory tests to determine the engineering properties of soil.
Depiction of soil profile.
Preparation of report.
Page 2
3. FIELD WORK
Field work includes drilling boreholes at locations as shown by client; conducting in-situ
tests like Standard Penetration Test (SPT); collection of disturbed soil samples;
undisturbed soil samples. The SPT activities will be captured by video camera, and still
photographs were taken for recovered split spoon. Soil samples disturbed and un-
disturbed will be sealed and stored. All relevant field data will be recorded in SPT sheet
and subsequently sent to laboratory. Boreholes will be drilled by percussion boring
method. The depth and location of boreholes is suggested by the client and shown in
sketch enclosed herewith.
Soil samples collected from split-spoon sampler at intervals of 1.5 m & 3.0 m, up to the
maximum explored depth of the boreholes. The samples were collected from split
spoon just after conducting SPT, stored, sealed as disturbed sample and transported to
laboratory for testing. Reference code: ASTM D 1586
Page 3
Collection of Undisturbed Soil Samples:
Undisturbed soil samples were collected from cohesive soil. The samples were
collected using Shelby tube sampler —75 mm Ø—and subsequently sealed to prevent
moisture loss and carefully transported to laboratory for testing. Reference code:
ASTM D 1587
4. In-situ Testing
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) will be conducted in the boreholes at intervals of 1.50m
& 3.00 m using a manually operated donut hammer weighing 63.5 kg by wash boring
method. Generally, SPT halted when a maximum of 50 blows counted for any
penetration but not exceeding 450 mm.
The number of blows required to penetrate the sampler 450 mm and blows required
to drive the sampler are recorded for penetration of each increment of 150 mm i.e., three
sets of blows are recorded. The SPT N-value is summation of last two set of blows
required to penetrate 300 mm (150 mm + 150 mm).
5. LABORATORY TEST
Relevant laboratory tests will be conducted on representative soil samples to determine
physical and engineering properties. Laboratory tests will be limited to Particle Size
Distribution, Atterberg Limit test; Unconfined Compression Test, Natural Moisture
Content and Direct Shear Test will be conducted on undisturbed cohesive soil samples.
Page 4
Particle Size Distribution
This test method covers the quantitative determination of particle size distribution as well
as fineness. The soil washed by No.200 sieve is used to determine the percentage of
fine and coarse particles and sieve analysis is done on soil quantity retained on
No.200 sieve Subsequently.
The resu ting data were acquired to obtain the particle resented in Size distribution and
the report. Reference code: ASTM D422-6
This test method covers the determination of liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index
of soil. Hand operated Cassagrande apparatus was used to determine liquid limit. The
plastic limit was determined using the hand method. Reference code: ASTM 4318.

Unconfined Compression Test
12 mm diameter small tube inserted into the disturbed soil samples collected by split
sampler sealed both side by wax and sent to laboratory to obtain natural moisture
content. It was also determined for the soil samples collected in the Shelby tube.

6. EVALUATION OF BEARING CAPACITY AND SOIL RESISTANCE
It is very important both for the geotechnical and design engineers having the clear
idea about the factors that influenced the blow count and variation of N-values recorded
for same soil strata in the field. Factors which influencing the SPT N value are hammer
efficiency (type of hammer and release mechanism), borehole diameter, sampling
method, rod length (Skempton, 1986; Seed, et al., 1985) magnitude of energy ratio E r
(can vary from 30 to 90%) etc.
We have improved raw field SPT N-values by applying certain factors. We are converting
N- values recorded in the field to N70 (Skempton, 1986) as follows:
EHCBCS CR N
N60 =
0.60
Where, N60 = SPT N value corrected for field procedures
EH = Hammer efficiency
CS = Sampler correction

Evaluation of Skin and Tip Resistance of Pile Foundation
Ultimate unit skin and tip resistance can be computed for each segment of the soil
strata based on the equation given by AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, Ninth
Edition, 2020:
Where,
Su or Cu= Undrained shear strength, (Terzaghi & Peck, C u=6.25N, kN/m2)
α= Adhesion factor (dim)
Pa= Atmospheric pressure (2.12 ksf or 101.325 kPa)
Nc=6 1 + 0.2 ≤9
Where,
D=Diameter of drilled shaft (m)
Z= Penetration of shaft (m)
Su= Undrained shear strength (kN/m2)

β= (1-sinϕ’f) tan ϕ’f
Where,
β = Load transfer coefficient (dim)
ϕ’f = Friction angle of cohesion less soil layer (0)
σ'p= Effective vertical preconsolidation stress
σ'v= Vertical effective stress at soil layer mid-depth
The correlation for effective soil friction angle for use in the above
equations shall be taken as:
ϕ’f = 27.5+9.2 log[(𝑁 ) ]

11. CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATIONS :
11.1 The proposed structure at BH-1(A), Ch 44+080KM, BH-2(B) Ch 44+220KM (RHS), BH-3(C)
Ch 44+440 KM (RHS), BH-4(D) Ch 45+340 KM, BH-5 (E) Ch 46+00 KM (RHS), BH-6 KM,
Ch 47+400 (RHS) where the location of 6 Nos.of bore hole points are shown on the site plan
attached in this report.
11.2 The Reduced level (RL) of the existing ground level of BH-1(A) is RL +6758m, BH-2(B) is RL
+4.160m, BH-3(C) is RL +4.20m, BH-4(D) is RL +4.00m, BH-5(E) is RL +11.171m. BH-6(E) is
RL +10.868m. The following computation has been done with respect to the existing ground
level of each bore hole.
11.3 The net allowable bearing capacity of soil for square footing at 1.50m, 2.50m, 3.00m, 3.50m
and 4.50m depth below the existing ground level of each bore hole has been furnished in item
no. 8 of this report considering a factor of safety 3.
► It is noted here that the design Engineer will take appropriate decision about the type,
depth and extent of foundation considering the economy and safety of the proposed
structure based on geological condition of the site and physical properties of the
underlying subsoil stratum as furnished in this report.
