3. (a) A body dipped in a liquid experience an upthrust. Explain three factors on which the
upthrust depends. (3 marks)
(b) Two boys, A and B are carrying an electric pole of weight 10,000N. If A holds the pole
5m from its centre of gravity and B holds 4m from its centre of gravity. Calculate the
load that each of them support. (6 marks)
4. (a) The efficiency of a press is 75%. If the radius of the load piston is 3cm while that of the
effort piston is 1.5cm. calculate the mechanical advantage of the press. (4 marks)
(b) A boy with a mass 50kg jumps out of a rowing boat of mass 300kg on to the bank with
horizontal velocity of 3m/s. with what velocity does the boat begin to moves backwards?

5. (a) You are provided with three mirrors; concave mirror, convex mirror and plane mirror.
Which mirror will you prefer to be a sight mirror? Give two reasons. (4 marks)
(b) A concave mirror is used to form an image of the pin object. By using a well labeled
diagram; show how you can obtain an upright and enlarged image. (5 marks)
6. (a) The figure 1 shows a car pulling a wagon carrying boxes. Explain operations of friction
observed in this picture. Give four points (4 marks)
(b) A mass of 3kg hangs at the end of the string. Using a sketched diagram, find the
horizontal forces needed to pull sideways until the string is at 30o to the vertical
(5 marks)
7. (a) The figure 2 shows a bimetallic thermostat used to regulate a cooler and heater in a
class room to keep the temperature constant. Which of the two devices A or B should be
the heater? Explain your answer. (4 marks)

(b) Two beakers are of identical size and shape; one beaker is painted black and the other
beaker is painted white. The beakers are filled with boiling water then covered. In which
beaker will the water cool most quickly? Give a reason. (5 marks)
8. (a) When you take a bottle of cold soft drinks from a refrigerator, water appears on its
surface. Explain this observation. (4 marks)
(b) An insulated cup holds 0.3kg of water at 0oC. If 0.2kg of boiling water at standard
pressure is poured into the cup. What will be the final temperature of the mixture at
thermal equilibrium? (5 marks)

at the same time? Justify your answer. (5 marks)
10. (a) What is the relationship connecting the frequency of sound source with its wavelength
and the speed of sound in air? (3 marks)
(b) If 5s elapse between a lightning flash and the clap of thunder, how far away is the
storm? (5 marks)

(c) A string is set vibrating by plucking at a point one-quarter of the length from the end.
(i) Draw a sketched diagram showing nodes and antinodes in a vibrating string.

(ii) Write the expression of the frequency note produced by the vibrating string.

11. (a) A group of form four students designed a d.c generator in their project. Unfortunately,
the designed generator produces the electric power of low voltage. Suggest two
alterations which can be done in order to improve the production of high voltage electric
power. (4 marks)
(b) Three parallel wires, A, B and C of the same length are placed equidistant from one
another as shown in figure 3. Wires A and C are fixed but wire B is free to move. If the
same current I, is passed through each of the wires at the same time, in which direction
will the wire B tend to move? Explain your answer (5 marks)
(c) A transformer is designed to work from 240V a.c mains. The primary coil has
4800turns. About how many turns of secondary coil would expect it to have in order to
give a supply 8V to ring house bell? (6 marks)
