WHAT IS IT
READ AND LEARN
Correct grammar is very important; thus, it is crucial to know some simple
methods to improve one’s grammar skills. We are often asked to define words. In
defining words, we should always use correct grammar. Here are some tips for you
to try.
1. Read.
Reading may be the number one way you can improve your grammar
skills. When you read, you reinforce correct grammar in your mind. It is helpful
to read out loud, as the combination of seeing, saying, and hearing assists in
solidifying what you have learned. In addition to improving your grammar,
reading will help with all aspects of your writing, from sentence fluency to
increased vocabulary.
2. Get a grammar manual.
It is useful to have a thorough reference book nearby that you can
consult when writing. This way, any time a grammatical question arises, you
can quickly refer to the manual to obtain the answer.
3. Review the basics.
It is vital to spend a bit of time learning or reviewing the basic principles
of English speaking and writing. Do some research on the parts of speech, as
well as on the common grammatical errors people tend to make.
4. Practice.
There are many excellent resources, both online and in print, conducive
to improving your grammar skills. A quick Internet search will reveal a multitude
of websites that offers grammar games and exercises.
5. Listen to others.
When your teachers or language partners give you feedback, listen to
them. Find out if you have a consistent issue with any topic. For example, do
you frequently receive feedback regarding run-on sentences or have issues
with subject-verb agreement? If so, make sure that when you proofread your
assignments, you pay special attention to those details. It may even be wise to
create your own checklist of items to be aware of in your writing.
6. Proofread out loud.
Sometimes re-reading written pieces fills in the gaps of missing
information. This is because the writer will not notice the mistakes in his or her
written text. Reading what is written to someone else is an efficient way to
evaluate whether correct grammar is used.
4
7. Write.
Just as it helps to read a great deal, it will also benefit you to write more.
The more you practice writing with proper grammar, the more naturally it will
come to you.
8. Study.
Never cease from learning. Always improve your grammar and study its
essentials. Mastering the rules of grammar and using them correctly will make
you a better speaker and writer.
Some Examples of Definitions with Correct Grammar:
Formal Definitions
A formal definition consists of three parts:
a. the term,
b. the part of speech to which it belongs, such as a noun or a verb, and
c. all the traits or characteristics that are specific to that term.
The dictionary is filled with formal definitions, but it is not the only place where
you will find them. Writers often include formal definitions when they are writing about
something that may be unfamiliar to their readers.
Example:
a. Term: freedom
b. Part of speech: noun
c. Traits: power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without
hindrance or restraint.
Definition:
Freedom (noun) is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one
wants without hindrance or restraint.
Informal Definitions
In an informal definition, the writer uses known words or examples to explain
an unknown term. These definitions may be synonyms or antonyms introduced
by or, in other words, or like.
Example:
Freedom, also referred to as liberty or independence, is when they are
free to think and do whatever they please.

Language can be a source of confusion in the workplace as well. When
technical terms are not understood or interpreted correctly, readers may not
know what the document is saying or what is expected of them. That's why
we need to include definitions as part of our technical writing. Definitions in
technical writing refer to explaining the meaning of a word as it relates to the
subject being discussed. Definitions can solve problems and clear up
confusion within a document. Providing a definition for your readers will
