Notes-Unit 4

Living things, known as organisms, possess seven characteristics including movement and reproduction. Viruses have a protein coat with pegs that allow them to invade cells and replicate, ultimately killing the host cell. Species are defined as groups of organisms that can reproduce with one another to produce fertile offspring, while interspecies reproduction leads to infertile offspring.

Notes- unit 4

*Living things are called organisms.

 they have seven different characteristics that are:
 Movement
 Respiration
 Sensitivity
 Growth
 Reproduction
 Excretion
 Nutrition

————————————->

*Characteristics of viruses:
 They have a coat made of protein that has a little pegs on
the outside.
 They have a substance called RNA inside the RNA is made
of little threats that contain a set of coded instructions for
making more viruses.

How viruses invade cells:

 The little pegs on the virus’s coat help with the stick onto
your cells and get inside it.
 Once they’re inside the cell, each virus burst open and
force the cell to copy the instruction on its RNA to make
more viruses. (Replication.)
 This kills the cell, and all the viruses go out of the cell to
invade more cells.

————————————->

*Species are a group of organisms that reproduce with their

own species to produce fertile offspring.

living organisms only reproduce with members of their

own species. Which results in a fertile offspring.
 Living organisms reproduce with different species if
they’re put in the same enclosure. Which results in
infertile offsprings.

*Dichotomous means dividing into two.
