Answer any five (05) of the following questions:
1. (a) What are electric fields and electric field strength? Derive an expression for the electric field
due to a point charge.
(b) State and explain Ohm's law, Biot-Savart's law and Ampere's law.
(c) A charged particle produces an electric field with a magnitude of 2.0 N/C at a point that is 100 cm
away from the particle. What is the magnitude of the particle's charge?
2. (a) State and prove Gauss' law of electrostatics. What are the applications of Gauss' law? Apply it
to find the electric field due to a line charge in cylindrical coordinates.
(b) Define potential at a point in an electric field. Find an expression for the potential at a point in an
electric field due to a point charge.
(c) A current of 3 A flows through a long copper metal rod that has a 2 cm diameter. The rod is 1.5
m long and it is connected to a 40V DC. Find (i) current density (ii) electric field in the rod and (iii)
resistivity of the material of the rod.
3. (a) What is Lorentz transformation? Write down two postulate Einstein's special theory of
relativity.
(b) Explain the term capacitor and capacitance. How can you calculate the capacitance of a
parallel-plate capacitor?
(c) What is escape velocity? Determine the de Broglie wavelength when an electron has a K.E. of 1
eV.
4. (a) If the force of gravity acts on all bodies in proportion to their mass, why doesn't a heavy body
fall faster than a light body? Why the Compton effect can evidence for this moment?
(b) A light and heavy body has equal kinetic energies of translation. Which one has the larger
momentum? Could you determine the conservation of linear momentum?
(c) Ultraviolet light of wavelength 350 nm and intensity 1.00 W/m2 is directed at a potassium
surface, work function of potassium is 2.2 eV (i) find the maximum KE of the photoelectrons. (ii) If 50
percent of the incident photons produce photoelectrons, how many are emitted per second if the
potassium surface has an area of 1.00 cm2?
5. (a) Does the uncertainty principle deny the possibility of dynamical variables having definite
values in a state? Define uncertainty principle and its consequences.
(b) Quantum mechanics in many cases leads to discrete values of dynamical variables. In such
situations, under what circumstances would the approach be applicable to the system? Derive a
general expression for the Schrodinger time dependent equation.
(c) A microscope using photons is employed to locate an electron in an atom to within a distance of
0.2A. What is the uncertainty in the momentum of the electron located in this way?
6. (a) Briefly explain why the electromagnetic waves rather than other known forms of waves are
central to the special theory of relativity.
(b) Give the theory of Compton effect and obtain an expression for the change in wavelength of a
photon undergoing Compton scattering.
(c) A 1.2 kg ball drops vertically on a floor with a speed of 25 m/s. If it rebounds with an initial speed
of 10 m/s. (a) What impulse acts on the ball during the contact? (b) If the ball is in contact with the
floor for 0.020 s, what is the magnitude of the average force on the floor from the ball?
7. (a) State and explain Kepler's law of planetary motion.
(b) What is conservation principle of linear momentum? Determine the magnitude of escape
velocity.
(c) The maximum and minimum distances of a comet from the sun are 1.4x10^12 m and 6x10^10 m
respectively. If the average distance of the comet from the sun is 6x10^11 m, what is the speed of
the comet at these distances?
(d) What is the velocity of a comet when it is farthest from the sun, assuming that in both positions,
the comet is moving in circular orbits?
