1.1 Overview
DFR Manager is a special tool which integrates the configuration and operation management of
PCS series Disturbance & Fault Recorders (DFR), and it can be applied in the control centers or
the substations.
1. User Management: To add, delete and modify user information, to configure the user
short message service (SMS) number and E-mail address, etc.
3. Operation Management: To manage fault record & IED event, local and DFR internal
waveform files; monitor DFR status.

12) : PCS-PC device diagnosis tool, to diagnose and operate the devices.
The DFR tree list is generated with the hierarchy of System, Region, Station, DFR and component.
If a node is deleted, all the nodes belong to it will be deleted, too. (E.g.: When a substation is
deleted, all the DFR information in the substation will be deleted, too.)
At the same time, when the fault records of the DFR have been received by DFR Manager, DFR
Manager can inform the users by SMS and E-mail.
The following table gives the minimum requirements to run PCS-9013 application correctly.

2.1 Overview
In the DFR management system, the users are divided into the system level user and the region
level user. The system level user can manage the personnel and devices of the whole system, but
the region level user can only manage the personnel and devices of a region of the system.
Both the system level user and the region level user are also divided into: the administrator, the
maintainer and the operator (i.e. the role of the users).
Sometimes the maintainer and the operator are called as the common users. The difference
between the administrator and the maintainer is that the administrator can configure of the user
information within the controlled area. The difference between the maintainer and the operator is
that the maintainer can configure configuration/operation management of the DFR within the
controlled area, while the operator can only configure browsing/operation and management of the
DFR.
1. Add User: Click the button “ ”, and then fill in/select the user information in the
right area.
2. Delete User: Click the button “ ” to pop up a prompt to confirm whether to delete
the user or not.
NOTICE!
Each user cannot delete himself and can only be deleted by the administrator of higher
level.
3. Set the Password: The password needs to be input twice in the 2 text areas to the right of
“Password” and “Again”, and the 2 passwords are required to be the same. The passwords in
the interface are invisible.
4. Set the phone number to receive SMS. Fill in the mobile phone number in the text area to the
right of “SMS”: Each bit of a valid mobile phone number must be a digit. SMS function will be
enabled only when the corresponding “Enable” is selected.
5. Set the E-mail address in the text area to the right of “EMAIL”: A valid E-mail address must
include the symbol “@” and “.”. E-mail function will be enabled only when the corresponding
“Enable” is selected.
NOTICE!
The SMS and the E-mail are filtered according to the region that the DFR belongs to
where the alarms (the fault records and the DFR events) occur. The SMS and the
E-mail are only sent to the available users who have the privilege to receive
SMS/E-mail in this region and this system level.
6. Set the region in the text area to the right of “Region”: Select the belonging region in the
drop-down box of the region. This region list is maintained in the DFR configuration
management interface.
NOTICE!
7. Set the role in the text area to the right of “Role”: Select the role in the corresponding
drop-down box.
8. Save the user: Click the button “ ”, and a prompt to indicate successful saving will
appear.
NOTICE!
2. The administrators (including the area level administrator and the system level
administrator) can modify the information of all the users controlled by them, but the
other users can only modify their own information.
Figure 2.2-4 User list (system level, region level or station level)
3. Only the system level administrator can modify the information of the regions where
the other users belong to and configure all the users. The other users can only select
the region themselves belong to and cannot modify the region configuration of other
users.
4. The common users (the maintainer or the operator) cannot modify their own roles
after logging in. Only the administrators (including the area level administrator and
the system level administrator) can modify the roles of the users within the controlled
area.

3.1 Overview
The configuration of the analog/digital channels of the voltage component, line current
component and transformer branch current component; the setting configuration; the
association configuration of these components;
Download the programs of DFR; upload and download the configuration files of DFR; upload
the settings in the menu “Calibrate Setting” of PCS-996 DFR or PCS-986.
NOTICE!
The configuration management function can only be used by the administrator and the
maintainer. The operator does not have the authority to configure the DFR, so the
configuration menu will not appear for the operator.
The region configuration is mainly designed for the manager to manage the DFRs of the controlled
substations, but the uncontrolled DFRs and substations will be invisible.
Install the full version, which contains the Config.xml Configuration function. With this
version, users can configure the physical devices and logic units. To configure the logic
units, that is, configure the associations between logic units (component) and physical
channels, as well as the associations between different logic units.
Install the simplified version, which does not contain the Config.xml Configuration function,
users should download the Config.txt to device. With this version, users can only add
devices, import/export information files and configure the physical device, but cannot
configure the logic units. The functions introduced in Section 3.3 is not available in this
version.
Select the “System” node, and then right-click and select the “Add Region” menu (click the button
“ ”) to pop up a dialog as shown in the following figure. Input the region name and click “OK” to
add a region.
NOTICE!
The region name should not include any spaces. Please use “_” to separate 2 words
instead of a space.
Select the region node to be deleted, right-click the menu and select “Delete Region” (or click the
button “ ”) to pop up a dialog as shown in the following figure to confirm whether to delete it or
not. You can delete this region (including all the information of the substation and the DFR in this
region) after confirmation.
NOTICE!
1. Only the system administrator and the maintainer can add/delete a region.
2. In order to avoid deleting all the substations and the devices in the region when
deleting the region wrongly, the system will not allow deleting a region when it still
have substations in it, i.e.: it is necessary to delete all the substations in this region
firstly.
Select the region node to add substation, select the right-click menu “Add Station” or click the
button “ ” to pop up a dialog as shown in the following figure. Input the station name and the
station address, then click “OK” to add a substation. The address of the substation will be
assigned automatically.
Select the substation node to be deleted. Select the right-click menu “Delete Station” or click the
button “ ” to pop up a dialog as shown in the following figure to delete this substation (including
all the information of the DFR in this substation) after confirmation.
NOTICE!
The software allows deleting the whole substation. However, ensure that it is necessary
to delete the whole substation and all the DFR information in it before deleting.
Select the substation to add DFR, select the right-click menu “Add DFR” or click the button “ ”
to pop up a dialog as shown in the following figure to add a DFR.
5. Device Address: The 103 address of the DFR, generally it takes the latest field of the IP
address, for instance, taking “22” in the above example.
After clicking the “OK” button in the above figure, the new DFR is added. Then right-click the DFR
name and select the pull-down menu “Import PCSXXX.txt From Device…” to import the
configuration file from the DFR device to the PCS-9013.
After import the file “PCSXXX.txt”, click the button “ ” to publish the DFR, which may takes 1
minutes.
Select the DFR node to be deleted. Click the right-click menu “Delete DFR” or click the button
“ ” to pop up a dialog box as shown in the following figure to delete this DFR (including all the
information in this DFR).
Select the DFR node to be copied, click the right-click menu “Copy DFR” to copy the DFR
(including all the information in it except the name and IP).
If a DFR has been copied, select the substation node to paste this DFR, and then click the
right-click menu “Paste DFR” to paste it. Except the IP address and the DFR name, all the other
parameters are the same as the parameters of the copied DFR. For similar Disturbance & Fault
Recorders, the DFR configuration can be accomplished conveniently by using “Copy DFR” and
“Paste DFR”.
Besides the functions list in the simplified installation version, there is other functions in the full
installation version, as shown below.
The configuration management mainly aims at the DFR management. DFR management consists
of 2 parts:
The parameter configuration of the device itself, i.e.: Name, Type, Sample Rate, IP and
Board Type.
NOTICE!
1. Voltage component:
The voltage component mainly refers to the busbar voltage or the line voltage.
Because the parameters of line and the parameters of transformer branch are different (The
line has positive/zero sequence impedance/admittance, while the transformer branch only
has the property about which side of the transformer. i.e.: HV/MV/LV side), so the current
component can be divided into 2 types: line current component and transformer branch
current component.
In the power system, the voltage sampling mainly refers to the busbar voltages, while each line
and transformer has its own current sampling channel, thus some current components correspond
to a voltage component, i.e.: some current components relate to 1 voltage.
The component configuration mainly aims at setting the relationships between the components
and the physical channels.
Similar to the protection relays, DFR also has a criterion to trigger waveform and some functional
units for protection, so DFR also has some settings. The functional units for protection correspond
to the components.
NOTICE!
Generally speaking, the number and type of the analog channels relate to the type of
the functional units for protection. E.g.: If a functional unit for protection needs to
sample zero-sequence current, so it is forbidden to assign only 1 phase current (such
as Ia) to the corresponding component, because zero-sequence current cannot be
acquired by sampling only 1 phase current.
Select the substation to add DFR, select the right-click menu “Add DFR” or click the button “ ”
to pop up a dialog as shown in the following figure to add a DFR.
generated automatically according to the default configuration. But the components will not the
generated automatically, so there is no association between the channels and components when
a DFR is generated.
The board configuration can be modified in the “Hardware Config” page later. The number of the
analog channels, binary channels, and GOOSE channels will be influenced after modifying the
board configuration.
The 2nd column in the “Hardware Config” page is the “Board Type”.
The 3rd column in the “Hardware Config” page is the “Board Desc” to indicate whether it is a CPU
board or a DSP board, etc.
Where:
The “Voltage Level” is only applied for the BI boards. 24V, 48V, 110V, 220V are optional.
NOTICE!
The board which occupies 2 slots must start from the slot of an even number.
E.g.: As shown in the above figure, NR1401-12U can only occupy the 4th~5th, the 6th~7th, the
8th~9th or the 10th~11th slot.
NOTICE!
If a board which only occupies 1 slot needs to be replaced by a board which occupies 2
slots, the 2 slots must be set as “Slot Not Installed” first, i.e.: the former boards in the 2
slots must be taken out so as to insert the new board which occupies 2 slots.
Select the DFR node to add voltage component and click the right-click menu “Add Component”
(or click the button “ ” in config mode) to pop up a dialog as shown in the following figure.
In this dialog, select “Voltage” and then click “OK” to pop up a new dialog to set the parameters of
the voltage component as shown in the following figure.
4. Voltage Type: “Bus Voltage”, “Line Voltage” and “DC Voltage” are optional.
“Uabc0”: Three phase voltages and zero sequence voltage are selected.
NOTICE!
The parameters of voltage components will remain the same when a new voltage is
added. When DFR Manager is closed and opened again, the parameters of voltage
components can still remain the same.
It is the same for the parameters of line current components and transformer branch
current components.
Similar to adding the voltage component, select “Line current” in the dialog in Figure 3.3-5, click
“OK” to pop up a new dialog as shown in the following figure, input the parameters and then click
“OK” to add a line current component in the DFR.
“Iabc0”: Three phase currents and zero sequence current are selected.
Select “Transformer branch current” in the dialog in Figure 3.3-5. Click “OK” to pop up a new
dialog as shown in the following figure. Input the parameters and then click “OK” to add a
transformer branch current component node in the DFR.
Figure 3.3-8 Dialog to set the parameters of transformer branch current component
“Iabc0”: Three phase currents and zero sequence current are selected.
Select a voltage component, a line current component or a transformer branch current and click
the right-click menu “Delete Component” to delete a component.
When a component is added, the functional unit for protection will be generated automatically, at
the same time, the analog channels with a certain number, order and type will be occupied
according to the “Channel Type” of the component.
E.g.: If a voltage component is added first and the “Channel Type” of the component is “Uabc0”,
the first 4 voltage channels of the 1st analog board with voltage channels will be occupied by this
component automatically. I.e.: the physical analog channels and the logical components are
associated.
Generally speaking, the channels occupied by a component are arranged continuously, so the
component names will be merged to make it easy to view them.
Sometimes, the channels occupied by which component and the channel type need to be modified
by the user. Right click the table and click the pop-up menu “ ”
to switch between the mode of merged component name (i.e.: as shown in the
above figure) and the mode of separated component name (i.e.: as shown in
the following figure).
Double-click the “Component” column of an analog channel to list all the components
corresponding to this channel type (Volt. or Curr.).
1. Board: The information of the board that this channel belongs to.
3. PIN Type: The type of this channel: Volt. (Voltage) or Curr. (Current).
When a component is selected, a dialog as shown in the following figure will pop up to prompt
whether to set the next several channels continuously. If “OK” is selected, the next several
channels with the same type will be set according to the “Channel Type” of this component. If
“Cancel” is selected, each channel will be set separately.
If the “Component” name of a current channel is “Line1”, and the corresponding “Channel Type” of
“line1” is “Iabc0”, if “OK” is selected in the above figure, the “Type” column of the following 3
current channels will be set as “Ib”,”Ic”,”3I0” automatically, and the “Component” column of the
following 3 current channels will be set as “line1” automatically.
If “Cancel” is selected in the above figure, the number and type of the channels may be
inconsistent with the “Channel Type” of the component, e.g.: only a channel “Ic” is assigned to a
component with a “Channel Type” of “Iabc”.
To deal with this problem, a self-check function is provided to ensure the consistency of the
component type and the channel:
Select a DFR and then right-click it, click the submenu “Check Components with Channels” or the
menu “ ” on the toolbar, a dialog as shown in the following figure will pop up if any
inconsistency is detected.
Figure 3.3-18 Check consistency of the component type and the channel
The BI channels include 2 types of channels: normal binary input channel and GOOSE binary
input channel.
Similar to the AI channels, the association between the BI channels and the components can only
be configured here.
The “Relay Operation” and “Trigger Type” can be configured for each BI channel here.
The values of settings can be configured here, and the settings can be enabled/disabled here.
The name of components and the association relationship between the current component (i.e.:
the “Line current” and “Transformer branch current” components) and the voltage component can
be configured here.
Figure 3.3-25 Configuration of the component name and the association relationship
NOTICE!
(i.e.: the operation that can influence the running of DFR), the button “ ” will be valid.
Click the button “ ” to publish the modification in the logic database to physical
database. The publishing process will take some time.
The tool provides the functions to download the configuration files to DFR and get the
configuration files from DFR and save them to database.
Meanwhile, the program files of DFR can influence the upgrade of the software version of DFR.
The system also provides the remote downloading function for DFR.
The management of configurations and programs are realized by selecting a DFR from the tree
and right-click the related functions.

in DFR Manager, a new dialog will pop up to prompt whether to create a new DFR in
DFR Manager or to import the configuration into the selected DFR in DFR Manager.
If the DFR does not exist in DFR Manager, the region name, station name and device name of the
DFR will be created in DFR Manager, thus the new DFR will be created in DFR manager and then
the corresponding configuration will be imported.
The region name, station name and device name will be filled by the configuration downloaded
from the DFR. If the region name, station name and device name have been modified before
importing, DFR Manager will search corresponding DFR device and then import the configuration
from this DFR device.
NOTICE!
The configuration of the boards, channels, components will be deleted when the
configuration is imported into DFR Manager.

to import the configuration stored in the .xml file into the selected DFR.
NOTICE!
The configuration of the boards, channels, components will be deleted when either of
the 2 methods is applied.
1. Upload configuration from a DFR and import the configuration to a DFR in DFR Manager.
In this method, if the DFR does not exist in DFR Manager, the DFR will be created in
DFR Manager.
2. Import configuration from an .xml file into the selected DFR in DFR Manager.
In this method, if the DFR does not exist in DFR Manager, no DFR will be created in DFR
Manager.
NOTICE!
The communication link between DFR Manager and the DFR device must be OK to
ensure all the download/upload operations. If the communication link between DFR
Manager and the DFR device is disconnected, a dialog will pop up as shown in the
following figure.
Select the menu “Information Text Import From File…” to import the PCSXXX.txt into the database
of DFR Manager manually.

The 3 simple above-mentioned filter modes will not filter according to other conditions
(i.e.: fault phase, fault current, start time and end time). They can only filter according to
device, substation and region.
After clicking the button “ ”, all the “Fault Records” which are filtered out from the table
below and have not been confirmed will be confirmed. All the “Fault Records” in the table before
and after confirmation are shown in the following 2 figures.
The above method shows that all the fault records are confirmed by the button “ ”, if a
single fault record needs to be confirmed , you can select one fault record, in the table below, and
double click the fault record to confirm it.
NOTICE!
For a fault record triggered by only 1 cause, the triggering time and cause will be
displayed. For a fault record triggered by more than1 cause, a “…” will be displayed in
the end of the “Cause” column to indicate more causes. Move the cursor to the “Cause”
column of this fault record, the details of all the causes will be displayed as shown in the
Select a fault record in the table, right-click the mouse to pop up the menu as shown in the
following figure.
Where:
“ ” menu will use waveform analyzing tools to open the waveform files
recorded in the “Fault Records”.
“ ” menu will pop up a dialog box. in this dialog box, according to the
fault time (omitting seconds) recorded in the “Fault Records”, the continuous waveform file of the
device at that moment will be got.
“ ” menu is used to delete the fault records. After clicking, a prompt dialog box will
pop up and show whether to delete the fault record, or to cancel the deletion operation.
Management of “DFR Events” mainly includes the real-time monitoring, alarm retrieving, alarm
confirmation, alarm deletion of DFR events and interrogating continuous waveform. “DFR Events”
is similar to “Fault Records”, the contents shown are the events of DFR itself.
The alarm filtering conditions are different, click “ ” to pop up the “Event Filter” window.
Management of local waveform files mainly includes retrieving of the waveform files according to
time range, waveform file type, and also includes opening the waveform files. Select the waveform
file type in the window: “Continuous Waveform”, “Trigger Waveform” or “Extract Waveform”; select
the start time and the end time, click the local retrieving button “ ” to show the following
local waveform files list, which includes the waveform file name, file size and the full path of the
waveform files.
Management of waveform files in the DFR mainly includes inquiry of the waveform files according
to time range, waveform file type, and getting of the waveform files. On the left DFR tree, double
click or right click a DFR in normal communication status, and then the button for getting waveform
files “ ” will be available. Similar to the interrogating of local waveform files, select the
waveform file type, start time and end time, then click the button “ ”, the tools will
communicate with the DFR to get the waveform files list of the designated file type and time range,
and it will be shown in the table below.
If the waveform file list cannot be interrogated because of some reasons (e.g.: Abnormal
communication of DFR), a failure dialog box will pop up to explain the reason.
Right-click on the interrogated waveform files list, the menu “ ”for export
the waveform files and the menu “ ” for opening the waveform files will
pop up.
If you cannot find the waveform file recorded in the waveform file list in local files by clicking the
The monitoring of DFR status mainly includes measurements and binary inputs in the DFR, it also
include the communication status of the DFR. In the right DFR tree, double click or right click a
DFR in normal communication status, and then the button “ ” for getting the real-time
data will be available. Click it to display the progress bar, measurements name, binary input name,
unit, update time etc. of the data.
After all the real-time measurements and binary input data are got, the real-time measurements
value and binary input status will be shown, and the time will be updated.
As shown in the following figure, the open status for binary input will be indicated as “0”, the closed
status for binary input will be indicated as “1”.
Except for interrogating the real-time measurements and binary input data of the above-mentioned
DFR, the icons of DFR on the oscillograph management tree also have indicated the
communication status of DFR. This status will be updated in real time.
DFR remote operation mainly includes time setting of the device, manual triggering and DFR reset.
Select a DFR which is in the normal communication status from the DFR tree, right-click the button
to pop up a menu as shown in the following figure.
After successful triggering, the DFR will upload a fault record of remote trigger waveform, and then
you can right-click on it to get the waveform file.
The 3 functions can also be realized by the shortcut menu “ ” on the toolbar.
The menu “ ” is used to launch the WEB function of DFR (e.g.: PCS-996R). In
WINDOWS OS, IE explorer will be launched, while in LINUX OS, FIREFOX explorer will be
launched.
When some fault records or DFR events are uploaded, the tool will automatically pop up an
operation window and switch to “Fault Records” or “DFR Events” page to prompt the user.
Now the fault records or DFR events will not be filtered and all the alarm records that can be
seen by the user will be shown.
