WHILE ATTEMPTING QUESTIONS ON CONJUNCTIONS-
IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER- FOR CLASSES 7 & 8
📌
📌 No change of sequence, unless extremely needed.
Always start a sentence with a capital letter and end
with a proper punctuation mark. (. , !)
📌
📌 Join the sentences with minimal changes.
While using a correlative or coordinating conjunction, do
not use a comma.
📌 While using correlative conjunctions the sentence
should start with one of the pair conjunctions and the
other can come in between.
📌 “Should” must be used if “lest” (in case,in order to
avoid, for fear that, in order to prevent) is used in the
sentence:
My teacher held my hand to cross the bridge lest I should
fall.
Read regularly lest you should fail.
Drive slow lest you should miss out the destination.
For Conjunctions:Join without using AND, BUT, SO, it
disallows us to use the following conjunctions also-
1. Therefore
2. Hence
3. Even though (Use Although/Though is allowed)
4. Yet
5. Only NOR (Neither ...nor is allowed)
6. However
7. Still
8. Not only…but also
9. So..that
10. Both… and

Points to be discussed:
📌
📌 Do not start a sentence with ‘since’ and ‘because’.
If a sentence starts with a Subordinating Conjunction, the beginning
clause should end with a comma (,).
Examples-When the sun sets, the birds return to their nests.
2
📌Format for using ‘not only….but also’ , ‘neither…nor’, ‘either…..or’.
(For Correlative Conjunctions)
While using correlative conjunctions the sentence should start with one
of the pair conjunctions and the other can come in between.
Eg: Not only did they paint the outside of the house but also the inside.
Examples-
a) Not only…… but also
Not only was he praised but also (he was) rewarded.
Not only his friends but also he plays cricket.
b) Neither……nor
Neither was he praised nor (was he) rewarded.
Neither he nor his friends support the team.
c) Either…..or
Either he will go to the movie or watch the match.
Either he will go to a park or a restaurant.
● Exception: both....and— He played both hockey and cricket. [Not used at
the beginning of the sentence]
📌 Explain the usage of no sooner…than & hardly…when
If the second event occurs immediately after the first, we can express that
idea using the structure no sooner … than or hardly….. When
📌 As soon as - This structure is also used with the same meaning.
📌
Where such words like ‘immediately’, ‘at once’, ‘right then’, ‘just then’ are
used, we must use only such conjunctions like -
As soon as, No sooner……than, Hardly….. when and no other
conjunctions.
But after joining, we must not use ‘immediately’, ‘at once’, ‘right then’, ‘just
then’ any more.
📌
Judging by the immediacy of the 2nd action following the 1st action, we
must use conjunctions - As soon as, No sooner……than, Hardly….. when. It is
not necessary that such words like ‘immediately’, ‘at once’, ‘right then’, ‘just
then’ have to be present in the given sentences.
3
When sentences begin with ‘As soon as’, ‘No sooner’ or ‘Hardly’, the
following word should be the verb whose tense should be the tense of the
verb in the 1st sentence given.
Eg: - This example shows the 2nd action immediately follows the 1st action
but there is no use of words like - ‘immediately’, ‘at once’, ‘right then’, ‘just
then’.
