INTRODUCTION
M/s Gujarat Alkalies & Chemicals Limited is setting up a manufacturing facility for Hydrazine
Hydrate.
One of the process stream contains Acetamide dissolved in Acetic Acid, Ammonium Acetate &
Water solution.
M/s Geist had developed continuous crystallization technology for recovery of the Acetamide
from the above mentioned solution.
Following document gives information about the proposed Acetamide Recovery System & its
brief control philosophy.

PROCESS DESCRIPTION & CONTROL PHILOSOPHY
The proposed system is divided in three sub-sections:
1. Acetamide Crystallization
2. Ammonium Acetate Dehydration
3. Acetic Acid Neutralization
Details of each section are as follows:
A. Acetamide Crystallization
a. Feed Storage:
1. Acetamide Solution is received in the storage tank ST-1201 at N3.
2. Level in the tank is measured by LT-1263 at N14.
3. Temperature in the tank is measured by TE-1272 at N1.
4. If temperature falls below set point, then XV-1259 will open.
5. Solution is pumped to Feed Storage Tank (ST-1202) using P-1209A/B.
6. Feed flow rate is controlled by FCV-1255.
7. Vent header from storage tank ST-1201, ST-1202, ST-1204, ST-1206 combine and
condense at common vent condenser E-1207.
8. Condensate from this vent condenser recirculated back to storage tank ST-1201.
b. Equalization of the feed:
1. Acetamide Solution is received at inlet nozzle (N1). Flow rate of the solution is
controlled by FCV-1255.
2. Neutralizer (ST-1207) overflow is received at the nozzle (N4).
3. Filtrate Recycle is received at the nozzle (N9). Flow rate of the same is controlled by
FCV-1256.
4. Crystallizer (CR-1201) overflow is received at the nozzle (N7).
5. Temperature of the equalized mass is measured by TE-1255 at N2.
6. Temperature of the equalized mass is maintained at 85 deg C.
9. If the temperature is lower than then set point, then XV-1255 will open. It will be closed
after achieving required temperature.
10. Level in the tank is measured by LT-1255 at N17.
11. Equalized Solution will be pumped to Heat Exchanger (E-1204) by using P-1207A/B.

c. Feed Pre-Cooling:
1. Equalized Feed flow rate is controlled by FCV-1257.
2. Equalized feed is cooled to 45 deg C using cooling water in E-1204.
3. Outlet temperature of E-1204 is measured by TE-1256.
4. Cooled Equalized feed is then directed to E-1203 where it is further cooled to 25 deg C
using the Crystallization Filtrate.
5. If the Outlet temperature of E-1203 falls below set point, then XV-1256 will close
thereby stopping the Filtrate Flow to E-1203.
6. Outlet temperature of E-1203 is measured by TE-1257.
d. Crystallization:
1. Pre-Cooled Equalized Feed will be received at inlet nozzle (N1) of the crystallizer (CR-
1201).
2. Crystallization Slurry Level is measure by LT-1257 at N3.
3. Crystallization Slurry temperature is measure by TE-1260 at N9.
4. Crystallizer Temperature is maintained at 10 deg C (+/- 2 deg C).
5. Temperature of the crystallizer is maintained by TCV-1255 by adjusting Chilled Water
Flow Rate.
6. Crystallization Slurry is withdrawn by using Pump P-1205A/B.
7. Part of the slurry with recycled back to the Crystallizer at N8 & remaining is transferred
to thickener (TH-1201).
8. Slurry Flow Rate to Thickener (TH-1201) is controlled by FCV-1258.
9. Thickener overflow is received in Filtrate Storage Tank (ST-1203) at nozzle N5.
10. Thickener underflow is directed to Pusher Centrifuge (CF-1201) by gravity.
11. Wet Cake of Acetamide will be discharged from the Pusher Centrifuge by gravity to
hopper.
12. Filtrate from the Pusher Centrifuge (CF-1201) will be received in the storage tank (ST-
1203) at nozzle N4.
13. Level in the Filtrate storage tank (ST-1203) will be measured by LT-1256 at N11.
14. Temperature in the Filtrate storage tank (ST-1203) will be measured by TE-1258 at N2.
15. Filtrate is pumped to E-1203 using P-1203A/B. Flow rate of the filtrate is controlled by
FCV-1264.
16. Filtrate is pre-heated to 30 deg C at the outlet of E-1203.

B. Ammonium Acetate Dehydration
a. Equalization of the feed:
1. Filtrate is received at Nozzle N2 at the storage tank ST-1204.
2. Post Dehydration Solution is received at Nozzle N3. Flow rate of the same is
controlled by FCV-1261.
3. Level in the storage tank ST-1204 will be measured by LT-1258 at N10.
4. Temperature in the storage tank ST-1204 will be measured by TE-1261 at N1.
5. If temperature falls below set point, then XV-1260 will open.
6. Equalized Feed is pump to Dehydrator (ST-1205) by using P-1204A/B.
b. Dehydration:
1. Feed flow rate to the Dehydrator (ST-1205) will be controlled by FCV-1259.
2. Feed will be received in the dehydrator ST-1205 at nozzle N2.
3. Liquid Level in Dehydrator will be measured by LT-1260 at N3.
4. Liquid temperature in Dehydrator will be measured by TE-1262 at N1.
5. Liquid temperature in Dehydrator will be maintained at 170 Deg C.
6. Temperature is controlled by TCV-1256.
7. Post Dehydration Solution is withdrawn from the bottom of Dehydrator at N15.
8. Solution withdrawal rate is controlled by FCV-1260.
9. If level is lower than set point, then FCV-1260 will close.
10. Solution is cooled to 70 deg C in E-1205 using cooling water.
11. Heat exchanger outlet solution temperature maintain by maintaining cooling water
flow rate, FCV-1266.
12. Column temperature is measured by TE-1263, 64, 65, 66.
13. Column pressure is measured by PT-1255, 56.
14. Vapour is condensed at E-1206 using cooling water.
15. Distillate is collected in ST-1208.
16. Level in the tank ST-1208 is measured by LT-1262 at N6.
17. Temperature in the tank is measured by TE-1268 at N2.
18. Reflux is pumped to T-1202 using P-1208A/B.
19. Reflux flow rate is controlled by FCV-1265.

C. Acetic Acid Neutralization
a. Feed Storage:
1. Post Dehydration Solution is received in the storage tank ST-1206 at N3.
2. Neutralizer (ST-1207) drain will be received at N9.
3. Level in tank is measured by LT-1259 at N18.
4. Temperature in tank is measured by TE-1267 at N2.
5. If temperature falls below set point then XV-1258 will open.
6. Solution is pumped to Neutralizer (ST-1207) using P-1206A/B.
7. Feed Flow is controlled by FCV-1262.
8. Part of the flow is recycled back to ST-1204.
9. Flow Receipt at Neutralizer ST-1207 is indicated by function block.
b. Neutralization:
1. Level in Neutralizer is measured by LT-1261 at N2.
2. Temperature in Neutralizer is measured by TE-1269 at N8.
3. Temperature in the Neutralizer is maintained by controlling the cooling water flow
rate by TCV-1257.
4. pH of the solution is monitored by pHT-1255 at N4.
5. Ammonia is received in the Neutralizer ST-1207 at nozzle N7.
6. Ammonia Flow Rate is controlled by FCV-1263.
