Assignment 1: Annotated Bibliography


The purpose of this assignment is to develop students’ research skills, critical thinking, and
ability to summarize and analyze scholarly sources relevant to social work. Students will identify
key sources related to a social work topic of their choice, evaluate the credibility of each source,
and demonstrate an understanding of how each source contributes to the field of social work.
Instructions:
1. Choose a Social Work Topic:
o Select a topic related to social work practice, theories, ethics, or interventions.
Examples include:
 The Role of Social Work in Mental Health
 Ethical Challenges in Social Work
 Social Work with Vulnerable Populations
 Trauma-Informed Social Work Practice
 The Impact of Poverty on Families
2. Find Five (5) Scholarly Sources:
o Locate five (5) credible sources, including journal articles, books, or
government/NGO reports.
o At least three (3) sources must be peer-reviewed journal articles.
3. Create an Annotated Bibliography Entry for Each Source:
For each source, include the following:
a. Citation (APA format):
o Provide a full APA 7 citation for the source.
b. Summary (150-200 words):
o Summarize the main arguments, findings, and key points.
o Explain the purpose of the source.
c. Evaluation (100-150 words):
o Assess the credibility and reliability of the source.
o Discuss the author’s background, publication, and relevance to social work.
d. Reflection (100-150 words):
o Explain how the source contributes to your understanding of social work.
o Discuss how it may be useful in practice, policy, or further research.

Formatting Guidelines:
 Typed, double-spaced, using 12pt Times New Roman font.
 Follow APA 7th edition citation style.

Assignment 2: Research Project Group
Assignment Overview: In this group research project, you will collaborate with your peers to
investigate a topic of your choice. This assignment aims to enhance your research skills, critical
thinking abilities, and understanding of social work research.
Assignment Instructions:
1. Group Formation: Form groups of 3-4 students based on shared interests.
2. Topic Selection: Choose a specific topic. You must not choose any topic related to
populations with the primary focus on children and people with disability.
3. Literature Review: Conduct a comprehensive literature review for your chosen
population. Identify key themes, theoretical frameworks, and evidence-based practices in
the field.
4. Research Design: Based on the literature review findings, design a research study to
evaluate your selected population. Define research questions, objectives, and hypotheses,
and justify your choice of methodology (e.g., quantitative or qualitative)
5. Data Collection: Implement the research study by collecting relevant data through
surveys, interviews, focus groups, or secondary sources. Ensure ethical considerations,
such as informed consent and confidentiality, are addressed throughout the data collection
process.
6. Data Analysis: Analyze the collected data. Interpret findings in relation to the research
questions and discuss implications.
7. Implication for Social Work Practice
8. Final Report: Submit a written report documenting your group's research project,
including literature review, research design, data analysis, and conclusions. Follow APA
formatting guidelines for citations, references, and overall structure.
