G8 Lesson 23 Displacement Reactions

The document outlines a lesson on displacement reactions for Grade 8 students, focusing on defining the concept, predicting reactions using the reactivity series, and identifying which metals can displace others. It explains that a more reactive metal can push out a less reactive metal from its salt solution, illustrated by the reaction of iron with copper sulfate. The lesson includes practical examples and encourages student engagement through individual work.

“DIPLACEMENT REACTION”

❑ Displacement reaction is a reaction where a more reactive

metal pushes out less reactive metal from its salt solution.

❑ Iron metal pushes out copper metal from its salt solution
because iron is more reactive than copper.
❑ In this case, iron has displaced copper metal from its
solution.

“PRINCIPLE OF DISPLACEMENT
REACTIONS”

❑ Metals higher in reactivity series can

displace any metal below them in their salt
solution.
❑ The displaced forms a solid coating on the
other metal.
❑ Less reactive metals cannot displace more
reactive metals. 18 November 2024 8
Reaction of copper sulfate solution and Iron
metal
Copper is displaced (pushed out) from its
solution and forms a brown rusty coating
on iron metal.
The reaction is given below:
