RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR USING AI IN RESEARCH
When to Use AI in Research:
1. Idea Generation: To brainstorm potential research topics, questions, or
methodologies. AI can be used to brainstorm ideas or suggest potential research
directions based on existing data.
2. Language Assistance: For grammar correction, improving clarity, and refining
sentence structure. AI can help in drafting initial versions of research papers,
improving grammar, or enhancing readability.
3. Data Analysis Support: For assistance in statistical computations, data
visualization, or generating insights. AI tools can be employed for processing
large datasets, identifying patterns, or performing statistical analyses.
4. Literature Search: To locate relevant studies and summarize existing findings
(provided proper citations are made). AI can be used to assist in identifying
relevant literature, summarizing articles, or generating research questions.
5. Formatting and Proofreading: For improving document layout and ensuring
adherence to style guidelines.
When NOT to Use AI in Research:
1. Original Content Creation: Generating entire sections of the research paper
(e.g., literature review, methodology, analysis) without critical review and input.
2. Data Fabrication: Using AI to generate fictitious data or manipulate findings.
AI must not be used to generate or manipulate data to produce false or
misleading results.
3. Plagiarism: Presenting AI-generated content as entirely original work without
acknowledgment. AI-generated content must not be submitted as original work
without proper citation and modification.
4. Ethical Violations: Using AI to bypass ethical considerations (e.g., generating
responses in interviews or focus groups without consent). AI should not be used
in research involving human subjects, sensitive data, or ethical concerns without
explicit approval from the ethics review board.
5. Critical Analysis Substitution: Relying on AI instead of applying personal
judgment, interpretation, and synthesis of information. AI should not replace
human judgment in interpreting results, drawing conclusions, or making ethical
decisions. Researchers must not rely solely on AI tools without critical
evaluation, validation, and human oversight.
6. Confidentiality Breach: Uploading sensitive or private data into AI tools that
could compromise participant confidentiality.
Additional Guidelines:
1. Transparency: Always disclose the use of AI tools in your research and
document their contribution.
2. Validation: Verify and validate all AI-generated outputs to ensure accuracy,
reliability, and relevance.
3. Ethical Use: Ensure that the use of AI aligns with ethical standards and does
not harm individuals or communities.
4. Continuous Learning: Stay informed about the limitations and potential
biases of AI tools and update your practices accordingly.
5. Always verify the output generated by AI tools for accuracy and relevance.
6. Clearly document any use of AI tools in the research process and specify their
contributions.
7. Ensure AI use complies with ethical standards, institutional policies, and
guidelines.
8. Maintain originality by integrating personal insights, critical thinking, and
innovative ideas into the research.
9. Seek guidance from your advisor or instructor when in doubt about appropriate
AI use.
By signing this form, I/We agree to abide by the above rules and guidelines in the use
of AI for this research project.
