Assignment I of Engineering Mechanics I
1. Determine:
a. The resultant of the given forces
b. The moment created at point A. and
c. The force-couple system at point A
𝜃 = 30°
2. For the figure shown below calculate the resultant of four given forces.
Assignment I Submission date May 07, 2021 Prepared by Nigist A.
3. Reduce the given loading system to a force–couple system at point A. Then
determine the distance x to the right of point A at which the resultant of the three
forces acts.
200 N 180 N
2m 5m
4. When the pole OA is in the position shown and the tension in cable AB is 5 KN.
a. Write the tension force exerted on the small collar at point A as a vector
using the coordinates shown.
b. Determine the moment of this force about point O and state the moments
about the x-, y-, and z-axes.
c. Determine the projection of this tension force onto line AO.
5. The 600-kg uniform beam is subjected to the three external loads shown.
Compute the reactions at the support point O.
Assignment I Submission date May 07, 2021 Prepared by Nigist A.
6. Calculate the reaction force for the figure shown below.
7. The right-angle uniform slender bar AOB has mass m. If friction at the pivot O is
neglected, determine the magnitude of the normal force at A and the magnitude of
the pin reaction at O.
8. Determine the external reactions at A and F for the roof truss loaded as shown. The
vertical loads represent the effect of the supported roofing materials, while the 400-
N force represents a wind load.
Assignment I Submission date May 07, 2021 Prepared by Nigist A.
9. The vertical mast supports the 4-kN force and is constrained by the two fixed cables
BC and BD and by a ball-and-socket connection at A. Calculate the tension in BD.
Can this be accomplished by using only one equation of equilibrium?
10. The light right-angle boom which supports the 400-kg cylinder is supported by
three cables and a ball and-socket joint at O attached to the vertical x-y surface.
Determine the reactions at O and the cable tensions
