Exam Modern Physics

The document is a Pre Lim Examination for Modern Physics at the University of Saint Anthony, focusing on topics such as the hypothetical medium for light, time dilation, and the principles of relativity. It includes sections for identification, computation problems related to relativistic effects, and an essay question on Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity. The examination assesses students' understanding of key concepts in modern physics and their ability to apply these concepts to solve problems.

Modern Physics

I. Identification. Read each item thoroughly and write what is

described in the sentence on the blank.

_______________1. A hypothetical medium that was thought light

traveled on it.
_______________2. It is the lengthening of the time between events that
occur on an object moving relative to the observer.
_______________3. The laws of physics must be the same in all inertial
frames of reference.
_______________4. The effect of an object measured by someone in a
reference frame that is moving concerning the object is less than the
length as determined by an observer at rest relative to the object.
_______________5. He published the theory that describes the motion of
particles with speed ranging from 0 to a value close to the speed of
light in a vacuum.

II. Computation. Read each of the problems then solve what is being
asked.

1. A spaceship traveling at 0.50c relative to the Earth is 45 m long as

measured by its crew. How long is the spaceship as measured by the
mission control in Texas?
2. An arrow flies past a person. When at rest, the arrow is 1.0m long.
Calculate the arrow’s length. When the arrow moves (a) at a speed
of 0.90c, and (b) at a speed of 300m/s.
3. An observer in frame S is moving to the right at a t speed of u =
0.600c away from a stationary observer in frame S’. The observer in
S’ measured the speed v’ of a particle moving to the right way from
her. What speed v does the observer in S measure for the particle if
(a) v’ = 0.400c (b) v’ = 0.900c?

III. Essay.

State and explain Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity.
