All Editorial Board Members: All EBM are responsible for at least one newspaper rack, including distribution to that rack and tracking placement and returns. Editor in chief: The editor in chief is responsible and answerable for the news and editorial content of The Skyline View. He/she is expected to exercise his/her best judgment in this respect. The EIC is responsible for setting and meeting editorial and production deadlines. The EIC is responsible for making sure the paper is picked and distributed. The EIC strives to publish a paper that is balanced and varied in its coverage of the campus. The EIC is responsible for seeing that the newsroom is run in a professional manner. The EIC seeks to give autonomy to page editors and other members of the Editorial Board; however, the EIC can ultimately override individual decisions in the best interest of the paper. The EIC, working with the adviser, coordinates training of new and returning staff members. When a factual misstatement of any consequence is published, the EIC shall see that a correction is published immediately in an equally prominent position in the paper as the original mistake. The EIC must be highly conscious of the possibility of libel in the newspaper. The greatest chance of libel in a college publication arises in statements that question the qualifications of people for their jobs. It is not necessary to name a person to libel him/her; if the reader can deduce the name of the subject, the statement is just as libelous as if the subject had been named. The EIC is responsible for determining the page budgets for the current issue. The EIC represents The Skyline View both on and off campus. Correspondence DutiesEmail, Voice Mail and Ground Mail: Pick up and distribute mail from Skyline View mailbox in room 5131 (Language Arts division office). Monitor and clean out email box for [email protected] account. Monitor and clean out email box [email protected]. Regularly check voice mail and return phone calls promptly. Managing editor: The managing editor represents The Skyline View in the editor in chief's absence. The M/A works closely with the news editor to insure thorough campus news coverage. The M/A coordinates package planning, working with the production manager, page editors, and photo and graphics editors to build several packages per semester. The M/A supervises the online editor and makes sure the web edition is uploaded on time. The M/A manages the tracking process of submitted work.
Staff Responsibilities
The M/A is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and professional appearance of the newsroom. (This does not mean that the M/A is responsible for doing the cleaning him or herself.) The managing editor is responsible for enforcing editorial deadlines. The managing editor records all actions voted on by the Editorial Board. The managing editor is in charge of circulation matters, if there is no business/circulation manager.
Online Editor: Uploads print edition to website on alternate Mondays or earlier. Creates online poll question. Seeks to raise the number of registrants for the site. Uploads breaking stories to web. Assigns web-exclusive content. Oversees podcasting, streaming audio and visual, slide shows and other multimedia additions to the web site. News editor: Stays up-to-date on campus and current events and looks for a local angle in state, national and international news. Makes all assignments in writing on assignment forms and follows up on the progress during the week. Receives all completed news assignments and checks to see if the assignment has been fulfilled. Seeks to make investigative and depth story assignments. Makes photo assignments for news stories. Writes headlines and captions. Edits news stories, including copy editing stories if there is no staff copy editor. Designs and lays out the news pages if there is no production team; gives input on design and layout of the news pages if there is a production team. Does a complete and final proof of the news pages. Makes certain mandatory items appear: a. Teasers at the top of the front page b. Inside View at the bottom of the front page c. Corrections Box, if needed d. Any other regular features decided on in the current semester Opinion editor: Responsible for the organization and production of the opinion page. Applies the Policy Manual to the opinion page. Keeps the staff box updated. Is responsible for seeing that all letters are retyped per copy specifications with the original going into the letter file, unless the letter comes in electronically. Verifies the identity of all letter writers. Writes headlines and captions. Makes certain mandatory items appear on opinion page: a. Designated policies, such as the paper being a First-Amendment publication. b. Letters disclaimer c. Letters policy
d. A staff box. Makes all assignments in writing on assignment forms. Follows up during the week on progress. Solicits guest opinion pieces and actively seeks ways to encourage readers to use the paper as a campus and community forum. Receives all completed assignments and checks to see if the assignment has been fulfilled. Makes photo assignments for stories. Edits opinion stories, including copy editing stories if there is no staff copy editor. Designs and lays out the opinion pages if there is no production team; gives input on design and layout of the opinion pages if there is a production team. Does a complete and final proof of the opinion pages.
Features Editor: Looks for feature angles to news stories breaking in the paper. Makes all assignments in writing on assignment forms and follows up on the progress during the week. Receives all completed features assignments and checks to see if the assignment has been fulfilled. Makes photo assignments for features stories. Writes headlines and captions. Edits feature stories, including copy editing stories if there is no staff copy editor. Designs and lays out the features pages if there is no production team; gives input on design and layout of the features pages if there is a production team. Does a complete and final proof of the features pages. Entertainment editor: Keeps up to date on all cultural events happening on campus and in the district. Makes all assignments in writing on assignment forms and follows up on the progress during the week. Receives all completed entertainment assignments and checks to see if the assignment has been fulfilled. Makes photo assignments for entertainment stories. Writes headlines and captions. Edits entertainment stories, including copy editing stories if there is no staff copy editor. Designs and lays out the entertainment pages if there is no production team; gives input on design and layout of the entertainment pages if there is a production team. Does a complete and final proof of the entertainment pages. Sports editor: Maintains high coverage level for all on-campus sports teams, both men's and women's, and intramural activities. Makes all assignments in writing on assignment forms. Follows up during the week on progress. Actively looks for and assigns not only sports game stories, but sports news and sports feature stories too. Receives all completed assignments and checks to see if the assignment has been fulfilled. Makes photo assignments for sports stories.

Chief copy editor: Maintains the proper flow of copy to its final form. Sees that weak copy is rewritten. Calls to the attention of reporters any serious or repeated errors. Is responsible for approving only copy that meets standards of: a. Completeness and fairness b. Strong and effective lead c. Correct organization d. Absence of libel, unnecessary profanity, bad taste, slurs e. Mechanics, including AP style f. Clarity g. Conciseness Helps write headlines and cutlines/captions. Proofreads page proofs before they are sent to the printer. Oversees copy editing staff. Business/Circulation Manager: Ad Sales: Ferrets out new ad clients. Communicates to staff what ads are getting published per issue. Uses the rate card/contract to attract new clients. (Adviser will send out ad contracts and invoices.) Creates and monitors ad sales email address. Makes sure all ad correspondence is sent to both the ad sales email address and [email protected] address. Circulation: Makes sure all racks have newspapers in them at all times, unless we are completely out of papers. Pulls aside 30 copies for adviser to store in archives. Keeps tabs on how successful the rack locations are. Moves racks when necessary. Contacts sister campuses and distribute paper to them. Contacts off-campus sites for additional distribution points; distributes paper to those places. Distributes to the Chestnut campus. Team Building: Should the business manager choose to do so, s/he can initiate team building activities for the staff.
Photo and Graphics Editor: Responsible for identifying what visuals could accompany each story. Works with managing editor to do package planning several times a semester. Works with page editors to make photo assignments to photography staff. Tracks completed assignments. Helps page editors choose appropriate photos. Advises page editors on cropping and photo sizing issues. Supervises PhotoShopping and prepping of pictures. Creates and/or assigns line illustrations. Makes sure that color versions of all photographs and appropriate art are saved for the web edition. Creates and/or assigns photo illustrations. Helps write cutlines/captions. ReportersJour 690 students: Responsible for covering stories deriving from beat. Responsible for informing editors about future stories. Should seek out opportunities to write the widest variety of material possible. Should seek out opportunities to learn the production side of the newspaper operation and help out under the supervision of the managing editor. Must keep confidential all discussions in the News Room, Editorial Board meetings or during class time. Should take care that the appearance of the News Room is professional at all times. PhotographersJour 690 students: Responsible for photographically covering news and feature events on campus. Responsible for informing the page editors or editor in chief of photo possibilities. Responsible for the completeness and accuracy of the information accompanying any assignment. Gets names and ages for all people recognizable in the photos. Gets any information necessary for writing an accurate cutline. Using your press card: Each staff member of The Skyline View is issued a press card for use during the course of the semester. Your press card is entrusted to your care because you are considered an important member of this staff and The Skyline View wishes to identify itself with you, as we hope you wish to identify with it. It is used primarily as a way for you to prove to sources and campus officials that you are an active member of the staff in good standing. It is also used to check out staff equipment in the Media Lab in Building Five. Obviously a press card can be abused and used in violation of The Skyline View policies or the professional code of ethics. The card is not intended as a way of getting the cardholder in for free to events unrelated to coverage for the newspaper. Any violation of the press card could lead to the editor in chief asking you to forfeit your press card. If you have any questions about how the card is to be used, please check with the adviser.
