QUESTION 1
Every individual has their own sort of philosophy which is determined by how one has
experienced life in their world. These interactions build what can be referred to as beliefs
and views and they influence on their decision making, way of thinking and actions they
take on daily basis, (Felix. O. Ugwuozor 2019).
A teacher’s unique teaching philosophy is mostly determined by their educational level
and the way they enrolled. This personal philosophy can indicate that he has been quite
reflective and purposeful about their teaching career. It is important for each individual
teacher to understand their philosophy because they are crucial in their teaching. These
philosophies impact on their teaching behavior; they get a picture of who they are, why
they are teaching and how they should teach as well as the description of why one
chooses to teach in a certain way. Lesson objectives, goals and the vision of their teaching
is influenced by their beliefs. They all help to form part of the teacher’s teaching portfolio
(Brookfield,2006; Seldin & Associates, 1993).
Why a Personal Teaching Philosophy?
⁻Identifying a personal philosophy of teaching, and practicalising it helps teachers
improve their teaching behaviors, and foster personal and professional development of the
teachers
⁻Through a professional teaching philosophy, teachers, assess and examine themselves to
know the goals they wish to achieve in teaching
⁻It provides stability, continuity, and long-term guidance to the teachers. They remain
focused and promote the dignity and relevance of the noble profession.
⁻Teaching is about making positive impact in the world, with the personal philosophy; a
teacher will be able to ascertain what kind of effect, he/she is having on the learners and
the learning process
⁻It is an organizing vision that helps a teacher to have a picture of whether he/she is doing
the right thing or not. It is very important for personal sanity and morale.
(Brookfield, 1990; Goodyear & Allchin, 1998)
Students spend quite a considerable amount of time with teachers and listening to them
and the way a teacher conducts themselves impacts learners’ lives hence why their views
and beliefs are crucial. If these are positive, they will motivate students and help them to
reach their full potential. In contrast, negative views and beliefs of a teacher will
demoralize and confuse students. According to Chatterjee (2021) teachers mould
students’ character and provide necessary support. Teachers may also guide students in
choosing the right career (Chatterjee, 2021). This means that if a teacher has certain
negative beliefs about a particular career, they may not be objective in offering advice
and end up discouraging a student from following that path despite the student’s passion
and compatibility, or even the marketability of the career.
2
How does a teacher's distinct teaching philosophy enrich the overall educational journey
for students?
Teachers have a crucial role in developing students' competence, so they should be creative
and help their students to be creative too. Among different factors, teachers' professional
identity, professional vitality, and creativity due to their significant impact in teachers'
performance have aroused much more interest (Reza, K. And Parvin, M. 2015). Their
philosophical statements helps to ignite their teaching ( Nancy Van Note Chism 1998).
There are a number of factors which are highly impacted by a teacher’s philosophy. These
components are the purpose of education, learning and teaching styles, teaching and learning
context, the curriculum lay out and the goals, aims and objectives, the teaching and learning
experiences the evaluation and assessment, professional growth and development, and
accomplishment of effective teaching.
Teachers' views and beliefs play a crucial role in teaching and learning for several reasons:
1. The way in which a teacher shares and steers instructions to their students is guided by their
beliefs. Teacher’s beliefs and views influence how they set lesson instructions as well as their
teaching strategies and methods.
2. Creating a learning environment which is positive in class depends on the teacher’s
philosophy. A Teachers' values impact the classroom culture and climate that they set.
3. Teachers' views and beliefs serve as a powerful model for students. Students observe and
internalize not just what teachers teach, but also how they approach learning, handle
challenges, and interact with others. Teachers who embody a growth mindset, resilience,
curiosity, and a passion for learning inspire and motivate students to adopt similar attitudes
and behaviours. These beliefs and values can have a lasting impact on students' own
development as learners.
4. Teachers' thinking capacity in reasoning, explaining topics can challenge his students to be
critical thinkers. Such an approach nurtures students' ability to think critically, solve
problems, and develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
5. A teacher who understands that people are different and is able to cater for individual needs
will be able to differentiate instructions in order to cater for all diverse learners needs. If they
acknowledge and address individual needs, teachers can enhance student motivation,
engagement, and overall learning outcomes.
6. Teachers' views and beliefs also shape the values and perspectives that students develop.
Teachers have the opportunity to expose students to different ideas, beliefs, and cultural
perspectives, fostering empathy, understanding, and respect for diversity. Teachers who hold
inclusive and open-minded views can create learning environments that encourage students to
explore different perspectives, challenge their own assumptions, and develop a broader
worldview.
In conclusion teaching is a very complex process which when given a proper layout of
strategies and concepts the outcome of behaviour modification and skills impartation will be
3
so positive and hence grooming responsible individuals who will curb the universal urge of
having an informed society. In this regard, teacher’s views and beliefs are crucial for teaching
and learning because they shape instructional practices, fashion the classroom environment
and help teachers influence students in a certain way. So a teacher who understands all these
will be in a better position to drive the teacher wheel with clear direction.

QUESTION 3
THE THREE KEY TRENDS IN STUDENT INDISCIPLINE THAT SIGNIFICANTLY
IMPACT ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND DISRUPT SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
Schools are places with a daily mandate to influence students to purely achieve the vision,
mission, and values set by the Institution’s leadership. This is far much challenging and an
important aspect behind every school set-up. The environment should be influential towards
the achievement of better performance of the students.
The three key trends in student indiscipline that significantly impact academic performance
and disrupt school environments are (i)school based, (ii) student based and (iii) societal
based.
(i) School based: These are the factors which are influenced by the school set
up or environment. The school based causes of indiscipline surface mostly
when the school leadership and teachers are not doing their roles of proper
management of school procedures. When teachers do not enforce the rules
and regulations, do not adhere to them as well, this will create a hostile
environment. A teacher who is always late for a lesson or not showing up
for class will create room for the students to be idle, play, make noise and
it will bring problems. Unconjucive school environment is also a cause of
hostile behavior because students may try to retaliate if their rights are not
considered. Poor leadership by management may also contribute because
the purpose is for them to build and guide students but a failure on their
side will destroy the students.
(ii) Societal based: The parents who are always overprotective when it comes
to disciplining of students, does not build her child. Unsatisfactory home
conditions also contribute to poor behavior of students and poor
performance. On another note some parents literally do not care about their
children’s school work, do not care whom their kids befriend at school and
mostly these are the students whose behaviors are always out of hand.
Unfortunately we have some Tuck shops which are operating by school
gates and they influence students to always have money and then they end
up selling drugs to them hence destroying their future.
(iii) Student based:
Sprick Randall S (2013) has highlighted in his e-book that a student’s behaviour has a serious
impact in their academic performance. It is every teacher’s desire to be able to manage their
classes well and help align the students’ attention and interest in learning. We wish all
students would behave responsibly.
Bullying is a very negative practice in Secondary schools. It can be done physically
or online and victims will feel unwanted, lonely, isolated and having low self-esteem.
5
They can also end up leading to poor performance, drop outs or having suicidal
thoughts.
The use of drugs which surfaces mostly at Secondary Schools is a major concern
amongst the factors leading to poor academic performance because some will be
newly initiated in such things and they end up having mental disorder and their
concentration levels are affected because of such depressants hence affecting their
studies.
Early sex indulgences amongst students and even with people of older age because
this is a very crucial stage when adolescents’ hormonal temperature gets heated up
and if not guided well they end up falling pregnant and the morning sicknesses affect
their concentrations in class, again their self-esteem is affected hence lowering their
study performance.
Nevertheless schools can address these issues effectively by ensuring the following:
Mupa P, (2023) highlights a number of pointers to pounder on in order to curb the
issues of indisciple in a school set up. Hs stresses that leadership means the ability to
map a way and show the direction as you lead and others follow. He indicates that
school leaders should
Frequently monitor students’ behavior and performance
Create a safe and orderly environment
I know of certain schools which do not allow tuck shops by their school gate and this
will really help to protect kids from being exposed to drugs.
Setting rules and regulations and ensuring compliance by all.
Engage parents in the school work and enforce that
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, School heads are the ones who are faced with these mitigating factors
because poor results impact on them. They are the ones who facilitate the planning,
organizing, coordinating and controlling of the whole system in the school hence why
the above seem to point at him (P Y Ngwokabuenui 2015).
We see them being in a better position to be the key player in all areas of concern with
students behavior and performance. Thus every school administrator requires a good
measure of discipline in his school.
