Compound Sentence
- A compound sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses (complete
sentences) joined by a coordinating conjunction such as:
1. For (meaning because)
Example: I took a break, for I was feeling tired. (= I took a break because I was tired.)
2. And (adds one idea to another)
Example: She speaks French, and she also knows Italian. (= Two related, equal ideas
joined.)
3. Nor (adds a negative idea)
Example: He doesn’t like coffee, nor does he drink tea. (= Both parts are negative.)
4. But (shows contrast or difference)
Example: I wanted to go hiking, but it started to rain. (= Shows an unexpected result or
contrast.)
Tone: Neutral. Just showing contrast between two ideas.
5. Or (offers a choice)
Example: You can study with us, or you can go to the library.(= Presents two options.)
6. Yet (means but or nevertheless, slightly more formal)
Example: The task was hard, yet she managed to complete it. (= Similar to "but", adds
contrast.)
Tone: Emphasizes that the second part is unexpected or surprising.
7. So (shows result or consequence)
Example: He worked all night, so he was exhausted the next day. (= Shows a cause and
effect.)
Complex Sentence
A complex sentence is a sentence that joins an independent clause (a complete sentence)
with one or more dependent clauses (incomplete ideas) using subordinating conjunctions.
