Assignment Guide and Problem Set 1
Vectors, Physics 21
Introduction
The problem set consists of five items designed to test your understanding of the concept of
vectors, vector addition and applying them in real physical situations.
Instructions
1. Download this document and print a copy for your personal use and later reference.
2. Solve each of the problems to the best of your ability after reading your lecture notes and
reviewing the relevant lecture.
3. You may write your solutions in any format available (.doc, .docx, .pdf, etc.), provided that
your solutions are readable.
4. You may include sketches or drawings in the document. These may be embedded vector
graphics or free-form bitmaps that you have drawn and scanned.
5. Upload your finished solutions in the UPV LMS IV. Make sure you click the SUBMIT
button or else your submission will not be considered and will not be graded. Be mindful
of the deadline indicated in the course site.
6. Each problem is worth 20 points for a total of 100 points for the whole problem set. In each
solution, the major share of the points will be credited to the actual solution. Points will
be given to correct drawings and sketches since they constitute part of your analysis and
solution. Submit neat and complete solutions for every problem for ease of checking by the
instructor.
7. Henceforth, all problem sets will be uploaded after each module/learning unit has been
previously uploaded.
Problems
1. Given:
F1 = 15 N θ1 = 35◦ ccw from +x-axis
F2 = 25 N θ2 = 170◦ ccw from +x-axis
Find:
F1 + F2
2. Find the magnitude of the resultant R of the vector displacements C and D whose compo-
nents (in km) along three perpendicular directions are:
Cx = 5 Dx = −3
Cy = 0 Dy = 4
Cz = −2 Dz = 6

3. The x-component of a certain vector is −25 units and the y-component is +49 units.
a. What is the magnitude of the vector?
b. What is the angle between the vector and the +x-axis?
4. A person wants to reach a point 3.4 km from her present location and is in a direction 35 ◦
N of E. However, she must travel along streets that go either N–S or E–W. What is the
minimum distance she could travel to reach her destination?
5. Two vectors of length a and b make an angle θ with each other when placed tail to tail.
Prove by taking components along two perpendicular axes that the length of their sum is:
√
r = a2 + b2 + 2ab cos θ
