Grade 8 Math Study Guide

1. Algebra

- In algebra, we work with variables (letters) that represent numbers.

- Example: Solve for x in the equation: 3x + 5 = 20

- Step 1: Subtract 5 from both sides: 3x = 15

- Step 2: Divide both sides by 3: x = 5

Practice Questions:

1. Solve for x: 2x + 3 = 11

2. Solve for y: 5y - 7 = 18

2. Percentages

- Percentages are used to compare a value to 100.

- Formula: (Part / Whole) * 100 = Percentage

Example: What is 25% of 200?

- Step 1: (25 / 100) * 200 = 50

Practice Questions:

1. What is 30% of 150?

2. If 80 is 40% of a number, what is the number?

3. Order of Operations
- The order of operations is important when solving math problems with multiple steps.

- Remember PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (left to right), Addition

and Subtraction (left to right).

Example: Solve 4 + 3 * (6 - 2)

- Step 1: Solve inside parentheses: 6 - 2 = 4

- Step 2: Multiply: 3 * 4 = 12

- Step 3: Add: 4 + 12 = 16

Practice Questions:

1. Solve 5 + 6 * (10 - 8)

2. Solve (3 + 7) * 2 - 4

4. Basic Geometry

- Geometry is the study of shapes, angles, and space.

- Key Formulas:

- Area of a rectangle = Length * Width

- Perimeter of a rectangle = 2 * (Length + Width)

- Area of a triangle = 1/2 * Base * Height

Practice Questions:

1. Find the area of a rectangle with a length of 8 cm and a width of 5 cm.

2. Find the perimeter of a rectangle with a length of 7 cm and a width of 4 cm.
