VALUE EDUCATION

• Value education is an integral part of the learning process that

focuses on the development of moral and ethical principles, fostering
holistic growth in individuals. It aims to instill virtues such as integrity,
respect, empathy, responsibility, and compassion, thereby preparing
individuals to contribute positively to society.
Importance of Value Education
• Character Building: It helps in nurturing ethical behavior, shaping an individual’s
character, and promoting a sense of integrity.

• Emotional Intelligence: It enhances understanding and empathy, helping individuals

manage emotions and build meaningful relationships.

• Social Responsibility: Value education encourages respect for diversity, tolerance,

and cooperation, fostering a harmonious society.
Importance of Value Education

• Professional Ethics: In workplaces, value education ensures

accountability and fairness, creating a more ethical professional
environment.
• Promoting Civic Values
• Personal Growth: It helps individuals lead purposeful lives by setting
priorities and making moral decisions.
The Need for Value Education

• Rising Challenges in Society: Issues such as corruption, intolerance, and environmental

degradation highlight the need for values like honesty, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship.

• Globalization: In an interconnected world, understanding and respecting cultural differences are

crucial. Value education promotes global citizenship.

• Technology advancements. The present education system has become largely skillbased. The
prime emphasis is on science and technology. However, science and technology can only help to
provide the means to achieve what is considered valuable. It is not within the scope of science
and technology to provide the competence of deciding what really is valuable. Value Education is
a crucial missing link in the present education system.
The Need for Value Education
• Youth Development: Young minds are impressionable and need guidance to
navigate moral dilemmas in their personal and professional lives.
• Sustainable Future: Values like conservation and sustainability are essential
for addressing global challenges like climate change and resource depletion.
• Developing Moral Character
• Evaluation of our beliefs. Each one of us believes in certain things and we
base our valueson these beliefs, be they false or true which may or may not
be true in reality. These believescome to us from what we read, see, hear,
what our parents tells us, our friends talk about, what the magazines talk of,
what we see from TV etc. Value Education helps us to evaluate our beliefs and
assumed values.
Basic Guidelines
The subject that enables us to understand ‘what is valuable’ for human
happiness is called value education. In order to qualify for any course on value
education, the following
Guidelines for the content of the course are important:
• Universal: It needs to be applicable to all the human beings irrespective of
cast, creed, nationalities, religion, etc., for all times and regions.
• Rational: It has to appeal to human reasoning. It has to be amenable to
reasoning and not based on dogmas or blind beliefs.
• Natural and verifiable: It has to be naturally acceptable to the human being
who goes through the course and when we live on the basis of such values it
leads to our happiness. It needs to be experientially verifiable, and not based on
dogmas, beliefs or assumptions.
Basic Guidelines
• All encompassing: Value education is aimed at transforming our
consciousness and living.Hence, it needs to cover all the dimensions
(thought, behaviour, work and realization) and levels (individual,
family, society, nature and existence) of human life and profession.
• Leading to Harmony: The value education ultimately is targeted to
promote harmony within the individual, among human beings and
with nature
Content of Value Education:
• To understand myself, my aspirations, my happiness
• To understand the goal of human life
• To understand the other entities in nature, their inter- connectedness
and co-existence and role of human being in nature
• To understand harmony at the four levels of human living
Process of Value Education
• Individualized Learning:- This is the highly interactive way of learning the values.
This is very personal one to one interaction with the learner.
• Group Learning:- The group working is always different from individual
working. Some students are lack behind from interpersonal skills. The group
learning helps thesestudents in overcoming these problems. This method teaches
co-operation and coordination among the members of the group.
• Project Learning:- This is one of the best methods of learning. The projects are
basically real life problems and students needs to find out the solutions on the
basis of their value system. This teaches the concept of self- explanation and Self-
verification to do best in their respective field.
• Open Learning:- Open learning is a teaching method i.e. among others, Open
learning is supplied to allow pupils self-determined,independent and interest-
guided learning.
Self Exploration
• Self-exploration is a process of seeing the truth about a reality on our
own right, by our own observation and investigation. Through this
process, we understand the reality and our participation (value) with
it.

• The simplest way to verify a given proposal on your own right is by

referring it to your ‘natural acceptance’. If the proposal is naturally
acceptable toyou, it is right for you. If it is not naturally acceptable to
you, it is not right for you.
• Self Exploration is a process of dialogue .This internal dialogue is
between
“what I am” and “what is naturally acceptable to me”
• “What I am” is my current competence on the basis of which I live. It
includesthe way I feel, the way I think, how I make decisions, what I
expect from others and all that. It has to do with my desires,
thoughts, expectations etc.
• “What is naturally acceptable to me” is my natural acceptance. It is
my intention. It is “what I really want to be”. It is a basic reference
which is apart of me.
Natural Acceptance
• When we refer to our natural acceptance, we directly get the
answers. We don’t have to learn them or get them from outside or
refer to some instrument!

• If you ask yourself, what is naturally acceptable to you – ‘to be in

relationshipwith your family members?’ or ‘to be in opposition with
them?’ The answer may be quite obvious and you would come up
with a spontaneous ‘to be in relationship’! How did you get this
answer? It is from your natural acceptance.
Characteristics of natural acceptance are:
• Natural acceptance does not change with time
• Natural acceptance does not change with place
• Natural acceptance does not change with the individual
• Natural acceptance is uncorrupted by likes and dislikes or assumptions or
beliefs
• Natural acceptance is innate; we don’t need to create it:
Purpose of Self-Exploration
Self exploration helps us to identify our innateness(Svatva) and move towards Self-
Organization (Swantantrata) and Self-Expression(Swarajya).

• It is a process of dialogue between ‘what you are’ and ‘what you really want to be’.
• It is a process of self evolution through self-investigation.
• It is a process of knowing oneself and through that, knowing the entire existence.
• It is a process of recognizing one’s relationship with every unit in existence and fulfilling it.
• It is a process of knowing human conduct, human character and living accordingly.
• It is a process of being in harmony with oneself and in harmony with entire existence.
The Content for Self-exploration
The content for self-exploration basically has the following two
subparts:
a. Desire: What is our basic aspiration?
b. Programme: What is the way to fulfil this basic aspiration?

First, we want to explore into our desire as a human being, and second,
we want to explore into the programme to ensure the fulfilment of that
desire.
The following points are to be kept in mind regarding the process of
Self-Exploration:

• Whatever is stated is a proposal

• Don’t start by assuming it to be true or false
• Verify it on your own right
• Don’t just accept or reject it on the basis of scriptures, instruments or
on the basis of others.
