Task
Write a short story 600 to 800 words that begins with “the door has been locked for years but
today I found the key .”
For the past three years, university had been a battlefield. I had entered full of hope, the first in
my family to join university. But the excitement quickly faded as reality hit me,tuition was a
mountain too high, rent was a monster that never slept, and textbooks drained whatever little I
had left. My days were a constant juggle between attending classes and working late-night shifts
at a fast-food restaurant. Sleep was a luxury I couldn’t afford, and assignments piled up like
unpaid bills.
Then came the academic struggles. No one had warned me that university wasn’t just about
intelligence; it was about endurance. The pressure to perform while battling financial stress took
its toll. I failed two courses in my second year, and the weight of disappointment crushed me. I
had always been the bright one, the hope of my family. Now, I was barely holding on.
By my third year, I was on the edge of dropping out. Scholarships were out of reach because of
my deteriorating grades, and my part-time job couldn’t cover both tuition and daily survival. My
landlord had twice threatened to kick me out . Each time I opened my laptop to study, the
thought of unpaid bills clouded my mind.
Something was different today .I had been walking past the university’s student support office
for years, never once stepping inside. It felt pointless. I believed asking for help was a sign of
weakness, that no one would understand my struggle. But today, as I passed by, I saw a notice
pinned to the door:” Financial Aid & Academic Support – No Student Left Behind”. Something
inside me shifted. Maybe it was desperation. Maybe it was the quiet voice in my heart telling me
not to give up just yet. Whatever it was, I turned the knob and stepped in.
Inside, a kind-faced advisor named Mrs. Koki welcomed me. I hesitated before speaking,
ashamed of my situation. But as I began explaining my struggles, the weight on my chest eased.
For the first time, someone listened—not just to my words, but to the exhaustion in my voice, the
silent battles I had been fighting alone.
That day, I learned about school bursary for students facing financial difficulties. I had never
applied because I assumed I wouldn’t qualify, but Mrs. Koki helped me fill out the forms. She
also introduced me to a tutoring program where I could get academic support for the subjects I
was struggling with.A week later, I received an email,my application for financial aid had been
approved. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to cover my outstanding tuition balance . I wouldn’t
have to drop out.
The tutoring sessions turned out to be more than just academic help; they were a saving grace. I
met other students who had faced similar difficulties, and for the first time, I didn’t feel alone. I
learned study techniques, time management skills, and most importantly, that failure was not the
end ,only a lesson. With each passing week, things started falling into place. My grades
improved, and I found a work-study opportunity on campus that paid better than my late-night
shifts. It wasn’t easy, but it was progress.
Looking back, I realized the door had always been there. I had spent years believing it was
locked, that no way out existed for someone like me. But today, I found the key.And the key was
asking for help.
