Why Tamliporia ?
The coastal region of Purba Medinipur, including areas like Ramnagar and nearby villages such
as Tamliporia, has a long and rich history tied to fishing and aquaculture. The Latitude and longitute
of that proposed area is 21°38'28.1"N 87°33'41.7"E. The region's economy has traditionally been
based on marine resources due to its proximity to the Bay of Bengal and numerous rivers and
estuaries.
1. Fishing as a Primary Livelihood: For centuries, the coastal communities in this area have
relied on fishing as a primary source of livelihood. Traditional fishing techniques have been
passed down through generations, and many families have made their living from catching
fish, crabs, and other seafood from the sea and river estuaries.
2. Historical Significance of the Sea: The region's strategic location along the Bay of Bengal
made it an important area for both local and international trade in the past. Fishing, along with
salt production and other marine resources, was a significant part of the economy. This
history dates back to ancient times when coastal communities engaged in seafaring and trade.
3. Cultural Practices: Fishing has shaped the cultural identity of the region. Festivals,
customs, and community events often celebrate the harvest of marine resources. Local folk
traditions and cuisine are also deeply influenced by the abundance of fish and seafood, with
seafood dishes being central to the local culture.
5. Challenges and Sustainability: Like many coastal regions, the history of fishing in Purba
Medinipur has faced challenges due to environmental degradation, overfishing, and the
impacts of climate change (e.g., rising sea levels, storms, and coastal erosion). Despite these
challenges, local communities have adapted and found ways to continue their fishing
traditions, often through the use of more sustainable methods or by diversifying into
aquaculture.
In summary, the long history of fishing in the Tamliporia area and surrounding regions of Ramnagar

Fish Drying Yard Platform is an essential facility in coastal areas, particularly where
fishing is a primary livelihood. It is used to preserve fish by drying them under the sun, which is a
traditional method of fish preservation that has been practiced for centuries. The platform provides an
organized and hygienic space for fishermen to dry their catch, allowing them to store fish for longer
periods without refrigeration. This is crucial for both local consumption and for export, especially in
regions where fresh fish may not be available year-round or where access to refrigeration is limited.
Key Features:
A. Drying Process: The drying platform is specifically designed to maximize exposure to sunlight
and airflow. Fish are spread out on the platform in a single layer, allowing the sun to reduce moisture
content and prevent spoilage. This process helps in preserving the nutritional value of the fish while
making it easier to store for long-term use. The drying period can range from a few hours to a few
days, depending on the weather conditions, fish size, and thickness.
B. Hygienic Setup: Hygiene is crucial when drying fish to ensure that the final product is safe for
consumption. Fish drying yard platforms are typically equipped with features like raised surfaces or
racks that keep the fish off the ground, preventing contamination from dirt, dust, or animals. Many
platforms also include drainage systems to allow excess water to drain away, preventing the
accumulation of moisture that could cause bacterial growth or spoilage.
C. Preservation: Dried fish is highly valued due to its long shelf life. It can be stored for months
without refrigeration, which is especially important in rural or remote communities where access to
modern storage facilities may be limited. In addition to being a reliable source of food, dried fish also
serves as an important product for local trade and export, providing an income for fishermen and their
families.
D. Sustainability: The drying process is environmentally friendly, relying solely on natural sunlight
and ventilation. Unlike other preservation methods that require electricity or chemical preservatives,
sun-drying is a low-cost and sustainable technique. It reduces the environmental footprint of fish
preservation, making it a preferred option in many fishing communities. Furthermore, the method
does not waste energy or contribute to pollution, making it an eco-conscious choice for preserving
seafood.
E. Economic Importance: A Fish Drying Yard Platform is not only a vital tool for food preservation
but also a significant economic asset for the local community. It enables fishermen to process large
quantities of fish, increase shelf life, and access broader markets for both local and international trade.

A Link C.C. Road is a critical infrastructure project for any fisheries area. It enhances transportation
efficiency, promotes economic growth, improves health and safety, and provides better access to
services, all of which are essential for sustainable development. By ensuring smooth connectivity,
such roads help create a stronger, more resilient fishing community that can thrive in the face of
challenges.
Protection works like RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) retaining walls are critical in
fisheries areas due to the unique challenges posed by the coastal environment, including coastal
erosion, tidal actions, and extreme weather conditions. Here are the key reasons why RCC retaining
walls are needed in fisheries areas:
Erosion Control: Coastal erosion is a major threat to fishing villages, especially those
located near the shoreline. Waves, high tides, and storms can erode land, washing away
fishing infrastructure like docks, boats, and storage areas. RCC retaining walls provide a
sturdy barrier that helps protect the land from erosion, stabilizing the coastline.
Safeguard Assets: Fishing-related infrastructure, such as storage sheds, fish drying platforms,
cold storage units, and processing areas, is often located near the coast. RCC retaining walls
act as protective barriers, preventing damage to these vital structures from tidal surges or
storm-induced flooding, which is common in coastal areas.
Secure Aquaculture Operations: Aquaculture systems, such as fish ponds and shrimp farms,
are also vulnerable to water surges or erosion. By providing physical barriers, RCC retaining
walls help maintain the integrity of aquaculture operations, reducing the risk of loss of stock
or equipment.
c. Flood Protection:
Prevents Flooding: Coastal fisheries areas are at high risk of flooding, especially during the
monsoon season or due to storm surges. RCC retaining walls can act as barriers against rising
water levels, preventing flooding that could damage infrastructure, disrupt fishing activities,
and impact the local economy.
Protects Community Safety: In addition to safeguarding infrastructure, retaining walls
protect the lives and livelihoods of local communities by reducing the risks associated with
flooding and coastal inundation.
Prevents Land Loss: Over time, erosion can lead to the loss of valuable coastal land,
affecting both agricultural and fishing activities. RCC retaining walls help stabilize the land
by holding back soil and debris, preventing its displacement and protecting the fisheries areas
for future generations.
Long-lasting Solution: RCC retaining walls are highly durable, resistant to weather
conditions, and require relatively low maintenance compared to other types of protective
structures like wooden barriers or sandbags. This makes them a long-term solution for coastal
protection, ensuring the continued viability of fisheries activities in the area.
Reclaim Land for Use: In areas where land has been eroded or is at risk of being lost, RCC
retaining walls can help reclaim and stabilize land, making it usable for fishing infrastructure,
storage, and other community activities. This is especially important in coastal areas with
limited land availability.
g. Environmental Impact:
Eco-friendly Construction: RCC retaining walls, when built correctly, can have minimal
impact on the environment, especially when compared to methods that involve frequent
maintenance or the destruction of natural habitats. They can also be integrated into the
environment to prevent further damage from coastal forces while still supporting the local
ecosystem.
In a fisheries area, RCC retaining walls are vital for coastal protection, preventing erosion, protecting
infrastructure, and ensuring flood safety. They offer a durable, low-maintenance solution that supports
both the environment and the local economy by stabilizing the coastline, safeguarding the community,
