MC 369 Control Systems

Take home Quiz

Assigned: Thursday April 03, 2025
Due Monday: April 07, 2025 7: 00 am

Question 1
a. For the system shown in the figure 1,
i. Determine the open loop transfer function G1G2.
ii. Determine the closed loop transfer function.
iii. Determine the poles and comment on the systems stability.
iv. Use Simulink to determine the time response of the system to a unit step input.

b. A system is given by 10𝒆𝑥̈ + 𝒆𝑥̇ + 2𝒆𝑥 = 𝒆𝑢(𝑡)

𝑥(0) = 1, 𝑥̇ (0) = 0.5; ∀𝑡 ≥ 0 where e=your index number.
Obtain a steady state solution for the system. Determine the peak amplitude and time to peak.

Question 2
A second order system has an open loop transfer function G(s), for an input F(s) and an output
X(s). where a=your index number eg. a=041.
𝑠 + 0.24𝑎
𝐺(𝑠) = 2
𝑆 + 0.12𝑎𝑠 + 0.24𝑎
a. Draw a close loop block diagram for the system using negative feedback. Use the
feedback gain H(s)=1.
b. Obtain the transfer function T(s) for the closed loop system.
c. Convert G(s) to the equation of motion of the form 𝑑𝑥̈ + 𝑒𝑥̇ + 𝑔𝑥 = 𝑓(𝑡) assuming
zero initial conditions.
d. Express G(s) in state space representation.

e. Determine the poles, natural frequency, and damping ratio of the open loop system.
f. Plot the transient response of both G(s) and T(s) to a unit step input. Determine the peak
amplitude and time. Comment on the amplitude attenuation or amplification of the two
systems G(s) and T(s) by comparing their steady state values.
Question 3
Explain the following concepts.
a. Feedback control.
b. Transfer function.
c. Time response.
d. Percentage overshoot
e. Settling time.
f. Stable system.
g. Plant.
h. Controlled variable
i. Marginal stability
j. Damping ratio
