ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the Smart Irrigation system using the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT
Technology is a network of physical objects that are connected with sensors, software, etc.
This chapter concludes the project based on the agriculture field that automates the irrigation
process and on the agriculture field that automates the irrigation process and solves the
challenge of water consumption in those areas. We have developed the system using different
sensors like (1) Soil Moisture sensor, which measures the moisture present in the soil, (2)
Humidity and Temperature Sensor (DHT11), which traces the temperature change. All these
sensors are connected to the Node MCU ESP8266 microcontroller, which is also a Wi-Fi
module. It uploads the data to the cloud and displays it in the form of readings detected by the
Blynk Application. This sensor's reading values control the pump for emergency purposes,
such as stopping the pump for irrigation. Thus, this project can automate the irrigation process
by analyzing soil moisture and climatic conditions, covering essential aspects like less labor,
power consumption, reliability, and cost
1. INTRODUCTION

Agriculture plays the main role in India for cultivating the crops Due to increase in
population, production rate in agricultural field should increase. The amount of water in the
agriculture system will always increase to ensure a better output rate. According to reports, the
agricultural sector currently accounts for 83 per cent of India's overall water use. Accidentally,
water use is not a planned process, so it is water waste. This shows that there is a vital need for
systems to be built that avoid water wastage without placing mental force on farmers. Mentoring
the health of the plants is an art that comes through experience of observing the biotic antibiotic
development in garden area. The rest of the Methods of irrigation are run manually and a wide
area takes a lot of time.
Some automated and semi-automated methods are used for irrigation of large areas.
These methods are not against traditional methods, but they provide alternative methods similar
to traditional methods. A number of the traditional methods like drip farming, sprinkler farming
etc. Using the automated method of irrigation, the other agricultural works can also be done by
the same time that will save the manpower also.
Here, Internet of things plays an important role in the industry that is based on agriculture like
motor production industries, starters production industries. Through web connection sensors can
able to communicate each other and transmit signals. With this Internet of things, smart
agriculture helps I n reducing usages like duration, manpower, and sources which helps in
increased productivity within certain amount of time and also in proper method, this smart
system of irrigation is built for looking the production using sensors like soil moisture detector,
humidity sensor, and temperature detector.
The main purpose of this irrigation is to use the technology in agricultural field, and also
by using the Internet of Things technology we can obtain more crop production with less
utilization of water and power. A monitoring system is designed to stop wasted water and
minimize.

2. LITERATURE SURVEY

Soil moisture is the water stored in the soil and is affected by precipitation, temperature, soil
characteristics and more. As moisture availability decline, the normal function and growth
of plants disrupts and crop yields are reduced. As climate changes, moisture availability is
becoming more variable. Since moisture is critical and water weather prediction and
numerous sensitivity studies investigating the impacts of soil moisture initialization. Plants
need four things to survive: light, water, soil and air.
However, to raise healthy plants, the most important element is the effect of water
Respiration in plants. The Arduino Uno can be programmed to analyze some signals from
sensors such as moisture, temperature and humidity. A pump is used to pump the water to
fertilize and water the plants. This research work enhances the small-scale areas cultivators
will be increased the yield of crops then will increase government economy. Automating
farm or nursery irrigation permits farmers to use the correct quality of water at the correct
time. Additionally, farmer’s mistreatment automation instrumentation is able to scale back
runoff from over watering saturated soils, avoid irrigating at the incorrect time in a day. They
lack an exceedingly featured mobile application developed for users with acceptable user
interface. It solely permits the user to observe and maintain the wetness level remotely no
matter of time.
The process of water leaving the leaves through evaporation via the stomach on the underside
of the leaves. A humidity sensor senses, measures and reports both moisture and air
temperature. The ratio of moisture in the air to the Highest amount of moisture at a particular
air temperature is called relative humidity. Relative humidity becomes an important factor
when looking for comfort. Humidity Sensors work by detecting changes that alter electrical
currents or temperature in the air.

3. EXSISTING SYSTEM

In the existing method the farming is done manually by farmer, before moving to the topic
farmers can’t predict the weather conditions and farm in their land. There came a new
technology to calculate soil moisture level, humidity and temperature belonging to the land
condition. A sprinkler and a water pump are used and for displaying the calculated value a
microcontroller or led is used. This is very effective but in rural and urban areas there is no
internet connection to connect with the LED display, sometimes there may be power
fluctuations also occur. For overcoming the method new technology is used in this irrigation
system.

Limitations of existing system:

By analyzing the existing system, some of its drawbacks are listed.

• It consumes more work.

• It consumes more Manpower.
• Accurate data is not known.
• Water consumption is high.

4. PROPOSED SYSTEM

Proposed system will overcome the drawbacks of existing system. Existing system is manual
and not user friendly in terms of visual appeal. Proposed system is computerized and user
friendly. The proposed system has many advantages.

The proposed system offers:

1. Manual work which is time consuming can be reduced.

2. It helps you see the progress.
3. It is cost effective.
4. Automatic Switching of pump.
5. Maintenance Cost Reduction.
6. Reduction in usage of water.
7. Reduction in labor.
8. Wireless Communication.
9. Energy Saving.

5. SYSTEM REQUIREMENT ANAYLSIS

Hardware Requirements: -

• NODEMCU ESP8266 Board

• Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor
• DC 3-6 V Mini Micro Submersible Water Pump
• Connecting Wires
• Breadboard
• DHT11 Sensor

Software Requirements: -

6. CONCLUSION

• The smart irrigation system implemented is cost effective for optimizing water resources
for agricultural production. The proposed system can be used to switch on/off the water
sprinkler depending on the soil moisture levels thereby making the process simpler to
use. Through this project it can be concluded that there can be considerable development
in irrigation with those of IOT and automation. Thus, this system is a solution to the
problems faced in the existing process of irrigation.

• Irrigation management controls the amount of used water and ensures that the crops
receive the right dosage at the specific timeframe. The Internet of Things makes
monitoring more accessible by connecting sensors and collecting all data on the
smartphone or laptop.

• Smart irrigation is an innovative approach to watering, enabled by connected sensors,

devices, and remote controllers. Farmers and their employees get a real-time outlook on
the irrigation process and can automate their workflow.
