INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE FOR JOB

SEARCHING AND NETWORKING

SUPPORTING THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY

What is Inclusive Language?

Inclusive language is a way of speaking and writing that aims to include and respect all people,
regardless of their background, experiences, or identity. By using words and phrases that are more
neutral and considerate, we can foster an environment where everyone feels welcome and valued.
In the context of job search and networking, inclusive language is especially important because it
helps create a positive and respectful atmosphere, which can lead to better connections and
opportunities.

Why is Inclusive Language Important in your Job Search?

Inclusive language is crucial in creating a respectful and welcoming environment for everyone,
including members of the LGBTQIA+ community. By using inclusive language during your job
search, you demonstrate empathy, understanding, and respect for others' identities and
experiences. This not only fosters a positive atmosphere but also helps build trust and rapport
with potential employers, colleagues, and professional networks. Being aware of and using
inclusive language in job applications, networking events, and interviews can contribute to a
more inclusive and diverse professional environment where everyone feels valued and
supported. Moreover, showcasing your understanding of these topics can signal to potential
employers that you are a culturally-sensitive and inclusive candidate, which can be a valuable
asset in today's diverse workplace.

How Can You Use Inclusive Language in Your Job Search

1) Respect Self-Identified Names and Pronouns

Always respect people's self-identified and pronouns. If someone shares the name they prefer to
use, make sure you use it consistently in your conversations with them. If someone shares pronouns,
use those pronouns whenever you refer to them, whether they are present or not. If you're unsure
about someone's pronouns, you can ask politely, "What pronouns do you use?" or introduce yourself
with your own pronouns to create an open and inclusive environment.

2) Use Gender-Neutral Language

To be respectful and inclusive, use gender-neutral language whenever possible. This means avoiding
gender-specific terms like "he" or "she," and instead using "they" as a singular pronoun. Additionally,
use terms like "everyone" or "folks" instead of "ladies and gentlemen" or "guys." When referring to
someone's job title, opt for gender-neutral terms like "firefighter" instead of "fireman" or
"salesperson" instead of "salesman."

3) Avoid Assumptions

During your job search and networking, avoid making assumptions about people's gender,
relationships, or family structures. For example, when asking about someone's spouse or partner,
use gender-neutral terms like "partner" or "spouse" rather than "husband" or "wife." By being
mindful of your language, you can create a more inclusive and respectful environment for everyone,
and you can build stronger relations of trust with the people you’re in contact with. Additionally,
avoid asking gender-specific questions about your colleagues or their background, such as “do you
have a husband?” or “do you live with your girlfriend?” Try instead to keep questions gender-neutral,
such as “are you married?” or “do you live with your partner?”

4) Inclusive Communication in Interviews and Networking

Practice inclusive communication during interviews and networking events by being open, respectful,
and genuinely interested in learning about others. Avoid making assumptions about someone's
background or experiences based on their appearance or name. Instead, ask open-ended questions
to encourage conversation and learn more about the person. When discussing work experiences or
job roles, use non-gendered terms like "team member", "colleague", or “they”, instead of "he" or
"she." For example, when sharing a story about someone you worked with, you could say: “I was
working with a colleague on a project, and they needed support with something. I worked with them
to find a solution to…”

If you're unsure about someone's pronouns, it's preferred to ask, "What pronouns do you use?" or
simply use their name instead of a pronoun. Remember to be mindful of your language and open to
learning from any mistakes you might make. This approach will help create a supportive and
inclusive environment during interviews and networking events.
