Saturn

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the solar system, known for its distinctive rings composed of ice, rock, and dust. It has over 140 moons, including Titan, and features a thick atmosphere with extreme winds and storms. NASA's Cassini mission provided significant insights into Saturn's characteristics and its unique features, including its low density and cultural significance linked to mythology.

Saturn: The Ringed Giant of the Solar System

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in our solar system, after Jupiter.
Known for its stunning system of rings, Saturn has fascinated astronomers for centuries. It is a
gas giant composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, with no solid surface like Earth.

Physical Characteristics

 Diameter: About 116,460 kilometers (72,366 miles)

 Mass: 95 times that of Earth
 Moons: Over 140 confirmed, including Titan—the second-largest moon in the solar
system
 Rings: Composed of ice, rock, and dust, Saturn’s rings are divided into seven main
groups labeled A through G

Atmosphere and Climate

Saturn’s atmosphere is thick and layered, with fast winds reaching up to 1,800 kilometers per
hour (1,100 mph). The planet features storms, including a long-lasting hexagonal storm at its
north pole.

Exploration

The most notable mission to Saturn was NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, which orbited the planet
from 2004 to 2017. Cassini provided breathtaking images and detailed data about Saturn, its
rings, and its moons.

Unique Features

 Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, has a thick atmosphere and liquid methane lakes.
 Saturn has a very low density—so low, in fact, that it would float in water.
 Its rings are unique in the solar system in terms of size and complexity.

Cultural Significance

Named after the Roman god of agriculture and time, Saturn has played a prominent role in
mythologies and scientific studies throughout history.
