Energy Resources Energy Resources

An Energy Resource is anything from which we can obtain energy. • Geothermal energy is energy stored in hot rocks underground.
Types of Energy Resources • The Sun is the origin of all our energy resources except geothermal, tidal and nuclear
 Solar Energy  Water (Hydro) power  Nuclear fuels energies.
 Wind Energy  Biomass fuels  Geothermal energy • Energy resources can be classified into two.
 Wave Energy  Fossil fuels  Tidal energy Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy Resources
An energy resource that will be replenished (replaced) naturally when it is used is called
• Biomass is material, which was recently living, used as fuel. Examples: wood,
renewable energy resource. Examples: Solar energy, Hydro power, Wind energy
charcoal, biogas, straw, …
An energy resource that is gone forever once it has been used is called non-renewable
• Fossil fuel is material, formed from the remains of organisms (plants & animals)
energy resource. Examples: fossil fuels and nuclear fuels
that lived millions of years ago. Examples: Coal, Oil and Natural gas
• Oil and natural gas form from the remains of microorganisms and Coal forms
from dead trees.

Comparing Energy Resources
Energy resources are used to generate electricity.
When comparing or selecting different resources, consider
1. Cost: initial (establishment) costs and running costs
2. Reliability: Is the energy supply constantly available?
3. Scale: Can it produce energy on a large scale?
4. Environmental impact: Does it produce GHGs and harmful wastes?
