Sustainable Development Goals includes the following:
1. No poverty - I believe that no poverty is the top goal for the whole world, established and
carried out by the United Nations to reduce poor families. One of those experiencing poverty
are the Filipinos, where it reached 32.4% in 2023, including the indigenous people in the
Philippines. This kind of poverty in the Philippines cannot be denied because according to
data, it continues to rise compared to previous years. That is why this is the primary goal the
United Nations wants to solve for all, not only for our country.
2. Zero Hunger – Since, The United Nations has 5 years left to do the goals. They also saw that
many people, especially children, experience hunger which is also considered malnutrition.
According to studies, 821 million people were malnourished worldwide in 2017. This is an
alarming problem being experienced by some countries especially in South Africa and also
South America. The goal is to support their food needs in daily living, which is why countries
coordinate for promoting sustainable agricultural, supporting small scale farmers, and equal
access to land, technology and markets. It also requires international cooperation to ensure
investment in infrastructure and technology to improve agricultural productivity.
3. Good Health and Well-Being – According to an article I read about this, this is also their
priority for many people. Since this SDGs already implemented from the year 2015, many
changes have been made by this third goal. In past years, one of the problems the world
faced was diseases including Malaria and HIV. The aim of this goal is to end such illnesses
experienced by individuals.
Additionally, this goal is not only focused on what I first mentioned but also on many sectors.
This includes strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse such as narcotic
drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol, reduce the number of global deaths and injuries from
road traffic accidents, and also by 2030, it aims to have access to sexual and reproductive
health care services and more.
4. Quality Education – Since the launch of SDGs, education received by students has been
insufficient due to many reasons. It could be that a family’s poverty prevents them from
supporting their children’s schooling. According to studies, many youth are weak in writing
and reading. That is why the fourth goal aims to give equal opportunity to all youth, especially
elementary students, to develop their knowledge and skills in various areas. Many schools
now offer free education, especially in colleges. This goal also aims to produce more
professionals to help develop the country and the whole world.
5. Gender Equality – Since there is still discrimination between the two genders, it aims to
promote equal regard for each gender. This goal wants to show that if men can do something,
women can also do it and vice versa. They will have the same access to opportunities around
them, and they will also be able to compete and to be a leader as well. And for additional, to
end the discrimination and violence, it implicitly addresses the challenges faced by LGBTQ+
individuals, who often experience discrimination and violence based on their gender identity
or sexual orientation.
6. Clean Water and Sanitation - This goal aims to provide clean water for every family,
because many people especially in provinces get water from rivers, seas, and wells, which
they use for laundry, washing dishes, and especially for drinking. The main goal for every
citizen is to improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping, and minimizing
release of hazardous chemicals and materials, reduce the proportion of untreated
wastewater, and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally.
7. Affordable and Clean Energy – 10% of people still lacks electricity, and most live in rural
areas of the developing world. Also to enhance international cooperation to facilitate access to
clean energy research and technology, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, and
advanced and cleaner fossil fuel technology, and promote investment in energy infrastructure
and clean energy technology.
8. Decent Work and Economic Growth - Honestly, I can't relate much to this goal because, in
the Philippines, I often observe that workers go abroad to seek higher-paying jobs. Still, since
this goal is for everyone, it aims to provide job opportunities-especially for middle-class
individuals. If achieved, this goal would greatly impact the world and national development.
9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure - Based on this article, more people now live in
urban areas than rural areas. So that, it aims to develop quality, reliable, sustainable and
resilient infrastructure, including regional and trans border infrastructure, to support economic
development and human well-being, with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all.
10. Reduce Inequalities – By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political
inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic
or other status.
11. Sustainable Cities and Communities – As I mentioned earlier, the population in urban areas
is increasing, especially in cities where more opportunities can be found. According to study,
by 2050, the urban population is expected to reach 6.5 billion. For the 5 years left of SDGs,
they provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all,
improving road safety, notably by expanding public transport, with special attention to the
needs of those in vulnerable situations, women, children, persons with disabilities and older
persons.
12. Responsible Consumption and Production – 1.3 Billion tonnes of food is wasted every
year, while almost 2 billion people go hungry or undernourished. For this, they created a 10-
year framework and each country will lead this goal to lessen this issue, aiming to achieve the
sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.
13. Climate Action – As time passes, so does the development of many machines or let say the
involvement of technologies. We can say these have many good impacts, but also many bad
impacts on our lives, one of which is the emissions from vehicles or factories causing climate
change. That’s why this goal aims to integrate climate change measures into national policies,
strategies and planning and improve education, awareness-raising and human and
institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early
warning.
14. Life Below Water – Prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular
from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.
15. Life On Land – Around 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihoods. It aims to
protect the forests that cover 30% of the Earth’s surface, provide vital habitats for millions of
species, and important sources for clean air and water, as well as being crucial for combating
climate change.
16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions – For this 16th goal, it includes some of the goals
already mentioned earlier, about the rights of every person as a citizen, the need for equal
justice for gender and quality opportunity for all as well. It also focuses on providing the needs
for each person for economic growth and development.
17. Partnerships for the Goals – The SDGs can only be realized with strong global partnerships
and cooperation. The goals aim to enhance North-South and South-South cooperation by
supporting national plans to achieve all the targets. Promoting international trade, and helping
developing countries increase their exports is all part of achieving a universal rules-based and
equitable trading system that is fair and open and benefits all.
REFLECTION PAPER
In today's situation, I can say that things are truly different now compared to the
past. The one goal I related to the most and liked while reading those articles was
the 13th goal of the SDGs, which is Climate Action. Last year, based on what I
watched on the news, the highest heat index recorded in the Philippines was in
Eastern Samar, reaching 55°C. This is very alarming for the entire world because it
greatly affects many people. During those times, I also saw news from other
countries like America about the serious effects of climate change.
But before that, let’s go back to the time of the pandemic in 2019, it was reported
that a virus had spread in China and some countries failed to stop it from entering,
which led to lockdowns airport to airport, place to place, and barangay to barangay.
People needed to stay in their houses to prevent the spreading of the virus. At that
time, there were barely any people on the streets or highways because of fear. How
about you? Did you notice anything good during the pandemic? For me, yes. While
watching the news, it was also reported that the pandemic had a positive effect on
the world, because the Earth was not experiencing daily pollution, which contributes
to the depletion of the ozone layer. Pollution that used to and still does bring
negative effects to the health of humans, animals, and even Mother Earth.
Through the help of these goals, they aim to solve global issues because so
many people are being affected. They need to take many steps to resolve these
problems. Like Climate Action, these actions must also go hand in hand with efforts
to integrate disaster risk measures, sustainable natural resource management, and
human security into national development strategies. How to be part of it? Just plant
it and always do it as part of your community.
